Tanya Monro elected Chair of the Optical Fibre Group of the Optical Society of America

Congratulations to Tanya for being elected Chair of the Fiber Optics Technology Technical Group in the Photonics and Opto-Electronics Division of the OSA !
The Photonics and Opto-Electronics Division encompasses the development of many of the devices used by the optics community. It oversees the development of new device technologies, integration of optical components to perform various functions, development of active optical system/subsystem technologies including hardware, propagation considerations, and beam manipulation techniques.
Tanya will preside over the Fiber Optics Technology group which focuses on all fiber developments. This role entails developing a sense of community among those with similar interests and organising OSA technical meetings and workshops.
Tree Topping Ceremony - illumin8 officially named "The Braggs"

On Wednesday we celebrated our new HQ Buildin reaching full height. The building has been named 'The Braggs' after father and son joint 1915 Nobel Laureates, Sir William Henry Bragg and his son, Sir William Lawrence Bragg.
University of Adelaide Vice-Chancellor and President Professor James McWha was joined by Senator the Honourable Don Farrell, and Tanya, in placing a Banksia tree at the top of the building in the traditional topping out ritual symbolising growth and good luck.

Professor Andre Luiten will relocate from Western Australia to take up the Chair of Experimental Physics at the University of Adelaide in February 2013 and bring with him a high-calibre team of researchers to establish a suite of world-leading facilities for precision measurement. Based in the University's School of Chemistry and Physics, Professor Luiten will conduct research within the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS). Congratulations to Tanya for being among the new Fellows to be admitted to the Australian Academy of Science ! Representing Australia’s leading research scientists, the Australian Academy of Science annually honours a small number of Australian scientists for their outstanding contributions to science by election to the Academy. Tanya has been acknowledged for her internationally significant achievements in "Developing nanophotonics for nonlinear optics and sensing, resulting in novel solutions to diverse measurement problems."

$50k won for Mineral Exploration Sensing

Congratulations to Tanya Monro and Stephen Warren-Smith for their successful application to the Deep Exploration Technologies CRC. They will receive $50k to work in collaboration with the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences on optical fibre sensors to measure trace metallic elements within drilling fluids.

Thank to all who attended this yearʼs IPAS New Year Celebration at Middlebrook Estate.
A good time was had by all with great food and wine served.
