 Wireless Network Upgrade - 'UoA'

 Information Technology Services has recently upgraded the University of Adelaide's wireless network to a more user friendly, secure and reliable network known as 'UofA'. Coverage has also been improved by 200% since December 2006 by providing extra wireless hotspots at North Terrace, Waite, Thebarton, RAH and University City campuses. This improved network is available to all current University staff, students and visitors (referred to here as 'users'). The new wireless network also provides a mechanism for users to access network facilities at other participating educational institutions in Australia and overseas with the implementation of 'eduroam'.

The 'UofA' wireless network is a significant improvement on the 'freewire' network that has been in operation since 2002 because users can authenticate directly to the 'UofA' network without having to install additional software. This new access method provides much needed security, more user friendly access, and the ability to automatically authenticate to the network. Users can access most University on-line services they have authorization for using wireless including email, network file storage, internet and printing. However billed printing for students is not yet operational.

'eduroam' allows University of Adelaide users to gain access to the University's network using wireless devices while visiting participating education institutions interstate and overseas. Users should check the wireless web site before traveling to determine;
" if 'eduroam' is supported at the institution they are visiting, and
" what software and settings are needed on their computer to be able to connect to the host institution's wireless network.

Conversely, visitors to The University of Adelaide from participating institutions will be able use our wireless network without the need to organise visitor access through the helpdesk. 'eduroam' is available at many institutions in Australia, Europe, New Zealand and Japan.
