ADAPTStudent Flexible Client or ADAPT (any Device, any Place and Time) is the technology that students studying in the University will use to access their learning and teaching software applications, and printers. ADAPT can be accessed by mobile computing devices such as laptops, tablets and smart phones anywhere on campus, via the UofA wireless network and and off-campus via broadband access. ADAPT are grouped under the following headings: About ADAPTWhat is Student Flexible Client or ADAPT? ADAPT is a new technology that enables students access to a number of educational applications (previously only accessible in designated Computer Suites), the internet and the ability to print to University printers using any computing device. ADAPT will be available anywhere on campus, within the UofA wireless network and at home or off-campus via broadband access. What does ADAPT do? ADAPT creates a virtual desktop on your computer so that you can access the software you need on the University\xE2\x80\x99s servers. For students, the software will be harnessing the processing power of the University’s servers rather than your device’s processing power. Who can access ADAPT? Students enrolled in a course (or electives) taught in the University of Adelaide will have access to ADAPT. When will I be able to use ADAPT? We are focusing on providing this as a pilot for one Computing Suite located in the Barr Smith Library BSL301 and up to 500 students on a first come first serve basis in the second semester 2013.The pilot gives us opportunities to address potential issues and collate user feedback. After that the timeframes for the rest of the University will be determined. Where will I be able to access ADAPT from? Students will be able to access ADAPT from anywhere on campus, in the BSL 301 or via the UofA wireless network or off campus using your own broadband / 3G / 4G services on your personal device. Will I be able to access my course materials over a mobile site/application? You will be able to access ADAPT on almost any mobile device including laptops, tablets and smart phones. Please, note that performance of ADAPT will depend on the performance of your mobile device and strength of its Wi-Fi hardware. For a richer experience we suggest to access ADAPT on a desktop or laptop. For smartphones or tablets, go to our mobile page for setup instructions. Can I access ADAPT from home? Yes. Go to http://adapt.adelaide.edu.au in order to access the ADAPT environment from home. You will prompted to install the Citrix Receiver to your personal device on your first logon. Subsequent logons will not require the Citrix Receiver to be installed. Please note that performance of ADAPT will depend on the performance of your broadband service. Can I access ADAPT via 3G? Yes. Please note that performance of ADAPT will depend on the performance of your mobile carriers 3G service. Logging on to ADAPTHow do I get connected to ADAPT? Getting connected is simple, first you need to connect to the University wireless network. The first time you use your wireless connection, you will need to open an internet browser and agree to the University’s acceptable use policy which will automatically pop up. Once you are connected, go to http://adapt.adelaide.edu.au and log in with your University ID and Password. Here, you will be guided through the installation steps for ADAPT for your device. What is a Citrix Receiver? A Citrix Receiver is a free software application used to connect you to ADAPT. When you go to ADAPT webpage to connect your device, we have enabled the Citrix Receiver to download automatically on Windows and Mac laptops when you click ‘launch’. Portable handheld devices (tablets and smart phones) and all other operating systems will be required to download the Citrix Receiver manually to be able to access ADAPT. Go to our mobile page for instructions on how to configure your mobile device for ADAPT. Where do I get the Citrix Receiver? Depending on your device, this process will automatically guide you through the download process. The Citrix Receiver will automatically download to your personal device when you log into http://adapt.adelaide.edu.au. For unsupported devices, go to the Citrix website at http://receiver.citrix.com/ where you can find the applicable Citrix Receiver for your device. What happens if I was disconnected from ADAPT and now I cannot reconnect? Your disconnected session will be allowed an idle time of 20 mins at which time you will be able to reconnect and resume your session. While at disconnected state, your session will be available for another 30 minutes before your session logs off. Will the time taken to access ADAPT be longer than the time taken to access a normal PC lab computer? No. Once you've connected for the first time, ADAPT will be running in less than a minute. If I log onto an UofA PC (e.g., in the library, computing suite or The Hub) will I need to access the virtual desktop? How will I do this? In some cases, yes. If the software you need isn't installed locally on the PC, you can connect to ADAPT via the ADAPT web page to access the software for your course. What version of Windows is running in ADAPT? ADAPT is running the University Windows 7 64-Bit environment. How many ADAPTs can I open? You will only be able to login and open one ADAPT session at any one time. If you have multiple devices, you will be able to open ADAPT on each one of these but ADAPT will only be active on the latest device that you open it on. What if I still cannot connect to ADAPT? Please review the FAQs and the ADAPT Troubleshooting Guide in the first instance to resolve your issue. If your problem is still not resolved, contact IT Service Desk on +61 8 8313 3000 for assistance. Using ADAPTCan the internet be accessed from within the ADAPT environment? Yes. You will have the same level internet access as you normally would from a computing suite computer. How is access to applications allocated in ADAPT? Access to applications within ADAPT is based on your student ID and the courses that you are enrolled in. Why can’t I see an application that I normally use or need to have access to? Students will be able to access their course software from their own devices through the use of ADAPT. Some software has license restrictions and will only be available to students enrolled in courses that utilise this software. If there is additional software that a student needs to access for their course, the ITS Service Desk should be notified. Can I download and install software in ADAPT? No. While you are able to download files, you will not be able to install any software within the ADAPT environment. How do I print from ADAPT? Printers and Follow Me printing queue are accessible once the student is connected to ADAPT. As you would normally do, select “File” and \xE2\x80\x9CPrint” for your print jobs to be sent to a global print queue. Students can pick up their printing from any printer by swiping their student card or entering their student ID to release the print job. Can a USB drive be used from within the ADAPT environment? Yes, a USB drive can be used as a normal drive and will allow you to read, write and print from it. Can I save locally to my computer from the ADAPT environment? No. You should save to a USB drive and then transfer your files to your local drive via the USB. How can I access files saved in ADAPT? Your files are accessible via the University network drives that are allocated to all staff and students. If I have been working on a file on my own device (not using ADAPT), how do I now access the file from within aDaPT? You will need to save the file to a USB drive. You can then access the USB while in ADAPT. My DeviceWill ADAPT work on my iPhone/smart phone? Yes however you may find the screen size too small to be practical. Please see our mobile page for steps to set up your mobile device. How do I connect to ADAPT if my operating system is not listed on the Citrix website? Most operating systems have been catered for by Citrix. Please to go the Citrix Receiver page for a list of supported operating systems. If your operating system cannot be found on the Citrix website, please contact the project team on adapt@adelaide.edu.au. ADAPT performance is slow, what can I do? When you’re connected to ADAPT, the University servers are running all of the software for your device so your own device only requires very minimal processing power. Depending on their size some applications can also add to latency of ADAPT, or when applications run concurrently. Does your computer only run slowly when using ADAPT, or does it run slowly all of the time? If it is only running slowly when using ADAPT then is it possible that you have an older device with an older type of wireless. Wireless "N" is the latest and fastest type of wireless and upgrading with a wireless "N" adaptor may solve your problem. If your device runs slowly all of the time, it may be that you don’t have enough processing resources (memory or CPU) for the way you need to use your device. If ADAPT doesn't work on my compliant machine then who looks after it? ADAPT has been tested on many different types of devices and operating systems. Citrix supports a number of different devices (see www.citrix.com for more information). In the unlikely event that your compliant device does not work, contact IT Service Desk. If aDaPT breaks my laptop/tablet then who fixes it and recovers my data? We strongly advise that you save your work to a cloud based service as well as a USB drive, and then if your laptop breaks you will not lose any of your work. Most laptops are built with a 'recovery' partition. Contact your laptop manufacturer or visit their website for more details. Getting More HelpWho do I contact if I need help?
