Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a cadet?
The University typically advertises student cadetship positions through the Adelaide University Union Employment Service. When there is a vacancy, students should forward their application to the person identified in the advertisement. There will be an interview process and the most appropriate candidate will be selected on the basis of merit alone.

Students should be aware that the University is an equal opportunity employer and an EOWA Employer of Choice for Women.

I'm an Arts student, surely you need to be studying Engineering or Computer Science to become a cadet?

Student cadets come from almost all the faculties of the University, including students studying Arts, Law, Commerce along with Engineering and Computer Science and most cadetship positions only require basic computer skills (familiarity with word processing and the Internet). If you managed to navigate to this website, it's likely that you have the basic skills you need to apply for a cadetship position.

Also, the cadetship progam can give useful experience to students regardless of their degree. In fact, this provides a unique opportunity for students studying a different degree to gain invaluable knowledge and practical business experience in information technology.

How are the hours I have worked as a Cadet recorded?
It is your responsibility to provide your timesheet to your Team Leader fortnightly.

As a student on the Cadetship Program, am I entitled to recreation and sick leave?
Yes, you are entitled to recreation and sick leave as awarded to any staff on contract at the University. If you have a part-time contract, the benefits are accrued at a rate proportional to your contract.

Example: working 12 hours per week you will accrue:

Type of LeaveAccrue/fortnightDays
Recreation 1.84 hours 6.5
Sick 1.38 hours 4.88

As a student on the Cadetship Program, am I entitled to superannuation?
Yes, you are entitled to superannuation; the University is required to make superannuation contributions on behalf of all its employees. The University contributes 9% towards the UniSuper Award Plus Plan. (Students on this program do not contribute towards the superannuation award).

What do I need to do if I wish to leave the program?
You will need to provide two weeks written notice to your Team Leader or Manager. You will be asked to complete an exit survey to provide feedback to ITS for the continual improvement of the program.

Do I need to be an undergraduate student to apply for a cadetship?
Yes. Cadetship positions are only available to undergraduate students studying at the University of Adelaide. A student may continue their employment with ITS throughout an honours year if they have already commenced employment during their undergraduate program.
