A run down of drivesWhen you open up My Computer or Windows Explorer, you are presented with a list of drives. These drives perform various functions on your computer. Local Disk (C:\) This is the main drive that windows installs to. It is not backed up, so if you save anything to this drive and the computer crashes you may, and in some cases will lose it. NOTBACKEDUP (D:\) This is a second part of the main hard drive. Just like with C:\, any data stored here is not backed up. Main on Brio (P:\) This is a network server and is the location of most files and programs that are installed on your computer (programs like Adobe reader, Microsoft Outlook etc.) a1234567 on UofA (U:\) This is your own personal drive on the network and everything in this drive is backed up. It is highly recommended that if you have important data, you store it on this drive. Shared (S:\) This is where any shared folders you have access to reside. If you believe you should be able to view a folder on this drive, you will need to fill in a shared network folder access request form and fax it through to the help desk.
a11678267 on UofA (V:\) This is your own personal drive on the network, which is only available on laptops and everything in this drive is backed up. It is highly recommended that if you have important data, you store it on this drive. This drive is not available when working offline with the laptop. |
