Data Plans

The excess data rates are important to take notice of as they reduce drastically as you move up from the base plans. 

If you do not specify a Data plan when purchasing a new handset:

• PDA will be put on the 5Gb data plan.
• Mobile phones will be on the 'pay as you go' plan. 
• Data plans now have a plan limit. If you exceed this limit, the Service Desk will notify you and offer you the choice to upgrade or reduce you data usage so as not t incur high data usage cost. Please see below for Excess rates per Mb.

You can move between Macquarie data plans at any time at no extra charge. Please email the Telecommunications help desk with your mobile number and your preferred new plan.

Usage Guide

Here are some examples of basic data usage to use as a guide. Please note that the website sizes below only refer to loading the opening page - each individual page of the website will be separate. Also the majority of PDA devices used by University staff will be configured to only download the subject header of the email until you open the actual message - so simply send/receiving will use considerably less than you would expect.

• Loading http://www.adelaide.edu.au/: 60 Kb.

• Loading http://www.google.com/: 12 Kb.

• Loading http://www.wikipedia.org/: 180 Kb.

• Loading http://edition.cnn.com/: 550 Kb.

• Average text only Email size: 5 Kb.

• Loading a 640x480 jpg image: 100 Kb.

• Loading a 1 minute mp3 file: 1 Mb.
