Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. How can I copy my contacts from my old phone to my new PDA?
A. With your SIM card in your old phone, utilise the phones copy to SIM function for the contacts. Then place the SIM card in your new PDA and utilise the copy to phone function.

Q. How does my Email and Calendar synchronise with the Uni servers?
A. The Email setup we use at the Uni stores all of your mail on the server – so you can have multiple Email clients and they will show the same contents. For Calendar we have a third party application called SyncML which will synchronise the data for you – over GPRS or Wireless depending on your setup.

Q. Can I use my stylus for handwriting recognition?
A. This is a built in feature on all Windows Mobile devices. Press the down arrow next to the onscreen keyboard icon (usually centre bottom of screen) and select the ‘Letter Recognizer’ function.

Q. I received a USB cable with my PDA. Do I need to plug it into my Computer?
A. Only for certain functions. You may need to use the USB cable if you have taken some pictures and want to upload them to your computer, or if you wish to synchronise your notes/tasks etc with Microsoft Outlook.

Q. What kind of wireless connectivity can my new PDA get?
A. The PDA devices with wireless connectivity built in still have some issues on the Uni wireless networks. While it is an officially unsupported service we will do our best to get you connected.

Q. Can I get an internet connection on my PDA by plugging it into the computer with the USB cable?
A. Although this has worked on several occasions it is fairly unreliable. You are better off using the built in GPRS or wireless connections to sync your email/calendar or browse the internet.

Q. If I purchase a Blackberry PDA will it be supported by the University?
A. Currently the University IT systems do not support Blackberry devices.
