Burning files to a CD or DVD

This document explains how to burn files (data) or a cd image onto a CD or DVD.

What software do I need?

The recommended burning software for ITS supported Windows computers with teh SOE installed is Ahead Nero 6/7. If this is not available in your area please contact the ITS helpdesk  to enquire about having the software installed. Other software is also available but is not covered by this guide.

Burning data to a CD or DVD is useful if you want to archive old files or make a backup copy of current data.

How do I burn data to a CD or DVD?

  • Click on the Start Menu and navigate to the Nero folder, click on 'Nero Express CD DVD Writing'

  • Depending upon whether you want to burn to CD or DVD, select the appropriate option from the dropdown menu in the top right corner. All other instructions throughout the guide remain the same.

Burning Data

  • Choose 'Data' and then select 'Make Data Disc'

  • Click on 'Add'

  • Navigate to a file you wish to burn and click 'Add'. Repeat this process until all the files you wish to burn are listed. Then click 'Finish' followed by 'Next'.

  • Enter a name for your cd. Click Next.
Note: You may also change burning options here but it is recommended that you use the defaults, as long as you ensure that the current recorder does not read "Image Writer" but points to your burners drive letter

  • After this is complete, the computer will begin burning. Upon completion you will be presented with the following dialog box

Burning from an Image File

An image is a replica of the cd contents contained within a single file and is a convenient way to store large amounts of data.
Note: The process is similar to that of burning data, so refer to the above section if unsure at any point

  • Select 'Disc Image or Saved Project' from the Nero express menu

  • Navigate to the image file and click 'Open'

  • Change any options that you wish to then click 'Burn'
