Mapping a Network Drive

This document explains how to map network drives on your computer so that they are easily accessible from 'My Computer'.

Although these instructions are for mapping S:, the same procedure can be used to map any drive letter or network folder.  If you are having difficulty mapping or accessing drives, try restarting your computer and if the problem persists contact the ITS Helpdesk.  Instructions are provided for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Mapping a Shared Drive

Although the example below shows how to map your Shared folder S:, the same steps can be ued to map other drives.

  • Open 'My Computer' and click 'Tools' -> 'Map Network Drive'



  • Select 'S:' as the drive in the pulldown menu



  • Enter \\ad.adelaide.edu.au\Shared$ with the folder location you would like to map e.g. \\ad.adelaide.edu.au\shared$\Services_Resources\ITS\DMS\FAQ



  • Click 'Connect using a different user name' and enter 'UOFA\a1234567' (where a1234567 is your account name - omit the quotes)  in the user field as below, click 'Ok'
  • Ensure 'Reconnect at Logon' is ticked then click 'Finish'


 

Mapping your U: drive

Mapping the U: drive is very similiar to mapping S:, except that after you have selected the U: drive you enter the folder location of you home drive e.g. \\ad.adelaide.edu.au\Users$\7\a1234567 where a1234567 is your account name and 7 is the last didgit of your account name.


Mac OS X

  • Select 'Go' from the menu then 'Connect to Server'



  • Enter cifs://elise.adelaide.edu.au/ as the server and click 'Connect'



  • Enter 'UOFA' in the workgroup field and your account name (eg a1234567)  in the name field as below and your standard password and click 'Ok'




Linux

  • Make sure the desired mount point exists: ie /home/jsmith/nas

  • Add to /etc/fstab:
