When will your area be upgraded?

Each area will be upgraded in one of two ways

  1. Planned after discovery and agreement with the School Manager (generally en masse)
  2. Immediately when a new computer is ordered (generally individuals)

There are a number of activities to do before we lock in an upgrade and these include:-

  • Discovery - This is where we validate the data we have about the staff member and the PC from the records we have.  For example, does the computer meet requirements, does it need memory, what software is used etc.
  • Preparation - This is where we collate the information we've found and work directly with the School Manager to resolve any open questions we have about the area.  It's at this stage we start discussing possible upgrade dates and the overall approach
  • Upgrades - These are the upgrades themselves and will be planned with the School Manager

Where a new computer is ordered, this process is accelerated.

Timeframes

ITS will progressively rollout the new Windows Vista Standard Operating Environment (SOE) to staff members throughout the University from January 2009 and throughout the rest of 2009.

This will be done in consultation with schools and areas and will ensure minimal disruption to your work.

A fixed upgrade schedule is unavailable.  This is so we can adapt and meet the needs of each area in terms of readiness and timing with specific events including grant submissions, enrolments, 'O' Week etc.

You will see a prescence in your area starting in Janaury and for the first half of the year undertaking Discovery.  Timing is largely dependant on availability.

Financial help

Because this project is supported at the highest levels of the University, funding has been set aside to subsidise University areas as a part of the upgrade.
