Planning your School Upgrade

Notwithstanding

  • New PC's which go straight Vista in most cases
  • Ad-Hoc / On Demand upgrades

The School is generally upgraded as part of an overall plan agreed with the School Manager / Department Manager or other nominated person

Key message: We will work directly with the School Manager and you to ensure the upgrade is done in a way that keeps the impact on you and the work you do to a minimum

Before we consider scheduling your upgrade we need to know more about the School, the people, the types of computers, environments and applications/software.  We do this by working directly with the School Manager over a number of stages listed below.  The ones in italics are all done in general between DE and the School Manager without any impact on you or your time.

Stage 1 - Collate available School Data

Stage 2 - Initial scoping with the School Manager

Stage 3 - Validate Discovery information we have on you and your computer (personal visit)

Stage 4 - Review Discovery data

Stage 5 - Schedule and do Upgrades (personal visit)

The detail on each stage

Stage 1 - Collate available School Data

DE have a Master Database that extracts information from various sources including

  • The computers in the School including its name, processor, memory and installed software

  • Last logged in user

  • Stage 2 - Initial scoping with the School Manager

With the data collected in Stage 1, we present an initial summary to the School Manager showing:-

  • Computers not suitable for Vista

  • Computers that need memory to be suitable for Vista

  • The Staff we think are in that School

  • We then work with the School Manager to identify

  • People to be added/removed on the list

  • Admin Staff

  • Academic Staff

  • Research Staff

  • Special needs

  • Computers/Staff we should not upgrade for various reasons

  • Stage 3 - Validate Discovery information we have on you and your computer

As agreed with the School Manager, someone from the DE team will visit or call you to confirm

  • Your contact details

  • The computer you use

  • The peripherals you use

  • The software/applications you require

  • Any other special requirements we need to know about

  • Stage 4 - Review Discovery data

With the data confirmed in Stage 3, we now have enough information to determine your overall readiness for an upgrade

Note: This does not mean we will schedule an upgrade (unless you request it).  We end up with a pool of upgrade candidates to discuss directly with the School Manager to propose suitable upgrade windows.  It could be in 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months or longer, all subject to the University Calendar etc.

We now create a plan with the School Manager, generally in the order shown in Stage 5.

     Stage 5 - Upgrades

In general upgrades will be done in the following order.  This is not a fixed approach and is open to variation.

  • Admin Staff

  • Academic Staff

  • Research Staff

  • Special needs
