Software - What is standard?Standard software can be defined as all of the applications that are deployed with the operating system. They are available to all users of Windows, Macintosh and Linux based computers. Windows - Microsoft Vista
Additional FunctionalityWindows Vista and Office 2007 provide functionality that, in some cases, may replace the functionality of other applications. This has the potential to save money on application purchase and maintenance costs and reduce support requirements. Some key examples of functionality provided by Windows Vista and Office 2007 are outlined below.
*depending on required functionality Other ApplicationsITS ManagedBesides standard applications, ITS currently manage many other applications on behalf of the University (the ITS Managed Applications List, or IMAL). As part of the Desktop Excellance project, ITS will work with the University to rationalise and consolidate our application portfolio, address compliance issues, and implement new technologies and business processes to deliver these applications to the desktop. These iniatives will bring substantial benefits to the University, such as:
Individually ManagedIt is not practical or desirable for ITS to manage all applications required by the University. Where there is substantial local expertise, a small install base (typically less than 5 instances), or requirements for ongoing application testing and assessment, some applications will be manually installed and supported by the end user. ITS will facilitate this by the provision of agreed business process and support, as negotiated with our customers. Business ApplicationsBusiness Applications are used by the business faculties of the University. They are co-managed by ITS and the areas to with they apply. Please note that these are not standard applications and must be requested during or after the process of migration to the SOE.
MacintoshITS currently have a standard application list for the Macintosh operating system. These standards are being redefined as part of Desktop Excellance. Details of the new standard will be published as they become available. LinuxITS currently have a standard application list for Linux operating system. These standards are being redefined as part of Desktop Excellance. Details of the new standard will be published as they become available.
