Files Migration Project

This part of the Infrastructure Program (the Files Project) is aimed at improving the University’s method of file storage.  In particular, the Files Project will replace the current usage of Novell Netware servers for file storage with a Microsoft solution.

The Files Project will provide several new features, hosted on new technology including;

  • A highly reliable file storage system that is ‘replicated with no single point of failure’
  • Access to the same unified file system for Windows, Unix and Macintosh users
  • Ability to access files from home for staff, students and affiliates
  • An improved method of managing quotas for staff and students needing different amounts of disk storage space
  • Empower users to restore their own files, from 1 day old up to 7 days old and even longer if required
  • A new directory structure that will follow closely the University’s organisational structure, to make finding data easier.

The scheduled start date for the roll out of all these new features is September 2007.  These new features will become progressively available to more staff and students as this and other Infrastructure projects progress.  The first phase will give access to all users' home drives and the second phase will be to provide improved access to shared data which is currently scheduled to complete towards the middle of next year. Users will gradually get access to more data as the shared data is migrated to the new environment.

How will this affect me?

Once you have been moved over to the new environment you may notice some changes to the format of your home drive and shared drive. Details of home folder changes can be found by referring to http://www.adelaide.edu.au/its/projects/infrastructure/files/where which explains the new location of your home folder and changes to the standard drive mappings.

For shared data in a particular area and were it is moving from and it's new location, please open the appropiate spreadsheet, based on the Division or Faculty. This spreadsheet contains all the necessary information about the shared data move, including who to contact if you require access to a shared folder.

Desktop Shortcuts will also need to updated, to point to the new location. You can use the same set of spreadsheets as mentioned above, to update desktop shortcuts with the correct path. For more information on how to update your icons see here.

Embedded links in office documents, spreadsheets and databases will also need to be updated. ITS has a toll that can do this automatically, after the migration

 The Files Project will also allow provide you with access to some new services, including:

  • Remote File Access - access to your University files from a remote location, such as a personal computer at home or a laptop on the University's wireless network.
  • Files Restoration - the option to restore previous versions of files or deleted files from the University's overnight backups.
