Home Folder Migration for Users

Home Folder Migration

You may be aware of the some of the changes ITS is making to the University's computer systems. One of these changes is to your home folder to enable access to some new features.

Currently you can access your home folder by two methods, U: or J: (see below for examples).

To enable access to the new features, we will be moving your home folder to a new centralised storage system.

Some of these new features will be:

  • Ability to access personal data from home
  • Ability to restore your own files and previous versions of files
  • Easier facilities to buy extra space for your home folder.

After your home folder has been migrated to the new storage service, you will notice two changes. Your home folder will no longer be accessible from J:, and U: will have a different slightly different look as shown below.

The key differences are in your J: and U: drives will be:

  • You will no longer be able to access your home folder / personal data from J:
  • The U: drive will have a new location shown within the quote marks, but you will access it as normal
  • The number after 'uofa\users$\' will match the last digit of your employee id number.
As your home folder is now accessed only through your U: drive, you may notice the following:
  • Any shortcuts to files in your home folder that used the J: link will need to be updated to use U:
  • The list of recently used files available under Start/Documents may not work for files opened via the J: drive until you open them using U:
The ITS Helpdesk is available to assist you with any problem you may encounter.

New Features

Once your home folder has been migrated, you can access some of the new features.

Remote Access to Files

This new feature will enable you to work on files from any computer connected to the Internet.

For detailed instructions on how to access files outside of the university, please visit http://www.adelaide.edu.au/its/projects/infrastructure/files/remote

Self Service File Restores

You will now be able to restore versions of your files from your U: drive. This can be used to restored deleted files, or previous versions of files, without having to call the helpdesk.

For a detailed explanation of this new feature please go to http://www.adelaide.edu.au/its/projects/infrastructure/files/restore

If you would like more information about the new features or what's happening to your home folder, please contact the ITS Helpdesk on 8303 3000 or email helpdesk@adelaide.edu.au.
