Software Self Service Project

Overview

The Self Service Software Installation project is a result of the necessity to effectively manage the acquisition and distribution of software throughout the University whilst at all times ensuring licence compliance through efficient business processes and systems.

Objectives

The objectives of this project are to:

  • offer a managed base platform to all users
  • provide a common portal for the acquisition, approval and deployment of software
  • deliver cost savings through collective software agreements and contracts
  • increase faculty staff efficiencies by centralising the management and deployment of software through ITS
  • implement effective systems and processes which address user, technical, legal and financial requirements
  • minimize the risk to the University by ensuring legal and contractual compliance in providing accurate records with comprehensive reports

 Scope

The Self Service Software Installation Project is dependant on the user adopting a new Microsoft Vista based SOE fully managed by ITS.

Additional software can subsequently be acquired via the portal which will be based on Ps'Soft's Asset Management Suite. The Ps'Soft portal will give each user the ability to choose the software they need and will take care of business, technical and financial approvals through to deployment.

All current University software licence agreements will be reviewed to ensure the best licence models and contracts are selected to suit University needs whilst providing cost savings to all users.

Benefits

  • Common supported platform
  • cost savings
  • centralised management
  • risk management and software compliance
  • streamlined approval process
  • comprehensive reporting

ITS will implement the control mechanisms required to block users installing software onto their computers illegally.
