File Storage

University funded file storage is provided for all University IT account holders based on their relationship with the University. All account holders have access to both personal storage (also known as their user space or home folder) and shared storage. General information about file storage, access and backup can be found here while information about storage allocations, and how to acquire more, is detailed below.

Quota period and allowance

The following table provides information on storage space for both staff and students:

	Staff, Visitors, Postgraduates (Research)	Students including Undergraduates, Honours and Postgraduates (Coursework)
Applicable period for storage	For period of employment	1st of January to 31st of December (for as long as their student relationship with the university continues).
User storage	Staff: 2Gb Visitors: 250Mb	250Mb
Shared file storage	300Mb per staff FTE per area	50Mb per student FTE per area
Area funded storage	Areas (school/branch) may purchase additional space for individual staff or shared area storage space.	Academic staff can request additional storage for individual courses. Areas are charged for the full amount requested irrespective of actual consumption.

Purchasing extra storage

The following table provides information on purchasing extra storage space for both staff and students:

Cost of additional user storage	Charges are currently $25 per Gb per annum. Requests can be made to increase quota to 5 Gb or 10 Gb.	Charges are currently $25 per Gb per annum per student. Requests must be for all students in a course.
Cost of additional shared storage	Charges are currently $25 per Gb per annum per person. Minimum purchase 20Gb ($500). See also Low Cost Storage	Academic staff can request additional storage for individual courses. Areas are charged for the full amount requested irrespective of actual consumption. Minimum purchase 20Gb ($500).

Low Cost Storage

A low cost storage scheme is available for staff members and areas. This is available for $1500 to $4900 per terabyte depending on backup options required. The minimum amount which can be requested is 500 Gb (0.5 Tb). Please contact the Helpdesk for further information.
