Internet Quota

The University manages access and use of the internet through the allocation of quotas.   University funded internet quota is provided for all University IT account holders based on their relationship with the University. Information about quota allocations, and how to acquire more, is detailed below.

Quota period and allowance

The following table provides information on internet quota for all IT Account holders:

Applicable period for quota Quota applies while relationship with University is current

There are 2 internet traffic quota periods per year:
- 1st January to 30th June, and
- 1st July to 31st December.

University funded Quota

Unlimited

The following University funded quota is provided for each quota period;

  • Undergraduates - 250Mb
  • Honours - 500Mb
  • Postgraduates (coursework) - 500Mb
  • International students - 500Mb

At the end of each quota period University funded quotas are set to zero.

Area funded quota Internet usage is reported to Areas which will be responsible for all traffic costs. Academic staff can request additional quota for individual students or courses. This will be charged at $0.05 per Mb in increments of $5 per student via a web form.
Warnings

Warnings may be sent if excessive or inappropriate use of the internet is detected.

An email warning is sent to students when they have used 25%, 50%, and 75% of their quota.

When students have exceeded their quota they will receive an email informing them that;
- they have used all their university funded quota,
- their access to the external internet is blocked, and
- they can purchase additional quota from the Student Centre.

Purchasing extra internet quota

Students can purchase self funded quota at the Student Centre on North Terrace Campus, at the Main Office on Roseworthy Campus or enquire in the WISA office on Waite Campus. The self funded quotas for internet traffic are charged at $0.05 per Mb in various bundles between a minimum of 120Mb for $6 to a maximum of 1Gb for $50.

At the end of each quota period any remaining self funded quota is applied to the next period.  Self funded quota is not refundable when leaving the University.

Monitoring internet usage

Each night, internet traffic usage from the previous day is debited against a student's quota and complete transaction records are made available on the SNAP website. Staff can also view their internet usage through this page:
