Internet Charging Principles

The University does not pass the cost of accessing on-net sites onto users.  The University charges for access to off-net sites to help cover the costs of this traffic. Depending on your relationship with the University, the costs of your off-net internet access will be passed on to you personally, or to your work area.

 Relationship Charging model
Staff, Title Holders, Visitors, Postgraduate research students and Scholarship holders Each area of the University pays for the off-net internet use of its staff, visitors, and postgraduate students. Area managers receive monthly reports listing the amount and cost of internet use for each individual or group of computers in their area.
Undergraduate, Honours and Postgraduate (coursework) students The University provides a set amount of off-net internet use free of charge to these students.  These students will be charged for any off-net internet use above the amount provided free of charge by the University.  Details of the service provided to students can be found on the Current Students web pages.
Students who are also staff Undergraduate, Honours and Postgraduate (coursework) students who are also staff, will have all their internet use treated as though they are staff and it will be charged to their work area accordingly.  This usage is monitored and excess usage may be referred to the individual for payment.

Definitions:

On-net traffic is data that flows between AARNet members, associates and affiliates across the AARNet backbone, or with equivalent organisations that are connected to overseas Research and Education Networks with an Internet2 connection (this includes most universities and research organisations of interest worldwide). Any data drawn from the AARNet mirror site is also on-net.

All internet traffic not classified as on-net by AARNet is off-net.
