Introduction to the Data Warehouse

Target Audience

This course is suitable for staff who provide support for decision-making processes, often dealing with complicated questions requiring a large amount of data from various sources to be combined and analysed to provide an answer.

Overview

Oracle Discoverer is a web-based application that allows users to access the data warehouse and retrieve University-wide information. This information can then be summarised, sorted and graphed. It can also be explored, analysed and managed in an intuitive and free-form fashion without the need to learn complicated report writing techniques.

Prerequisite and Co-requisite Courses

This course assumes that you are able to use a PC running Windows 95 or above and have used a web browser such as Internet Explorer. No previous experience with Oracle Discoverer is assumed. Familiarity with the Student Administration System terminology is also required. This may be obtained through attendance at training in the Student Administration System or through experience with DEST reporting.

Course Duration

3.5 hours.

Competencies

At the completion of the course, attendees will be able to:

1. Access the data warehouse.
2. Navigate a workbook of basic table worksheets, change the layouts and sort the data.
3. Filter the data and summarise it using totals and percentages.
4. Create cross tabulations, change the layouts and summarise vertically and horizontally.
5. Drill fields in and out.
6. Export data to Excel.
7. Add charts and calculations to a worksheet.
8. Format worksheets to improve legibility.
9. Create, save and share a workbook.
