Timetabling with Syllabus Plus

This course consists of six modules. If you have completed a set of PeopleSoft training you are welcome to return at any time if you would like to practice your skills in one or more units:

Target Audience

This course is aimed at staff who need to enter or amend details of the University\x92s class timetable using Syllabus Plus.

Overview

Timetabling with Syllabus Plus covers the basics needed to begin using Syllabus Plus to create and amend the University timetable.

Prerequisite and Co-requisite Courses

This course assumes that you are able to use a PC running Windows 95 or above. No prior knowledge of Syllabus Plus is required. It is required that staff will attend all six modules. The six modules must be done in sequence because successive modules built on the skills developed in the previous one. Approval from the Timetable Coordinator is required for attendance at this course.

Competencies

At the completion of the course, attendees will be able to:

  1. Understand the concepts and business rules involved in timetabling.
  2. Start Syllabus Plus and manage image files.
  3. Extract, amend, delete and create Programmes of Study.
  4. Extract, amend, delete and create Student Sets.
  5. Extract, amend and delete Modules.
  6. Create records for staff.
  7. Add an Activity Template.
  8. Generate Activities and allocate Student Sets.
  9. Allocate Activity Templates to a Priority Group.
  10. Timetable Activities.
  11. Stack Activities to be held in the same location at the same time.
  12. Use advanced filtering features.
  13. Create Activity Templates for guest lectures and additional classes in a stream.
  14. Understand the relationship between Named Availabilities in Syllabus Plus and sessions in PeopleSoft.
  15. Use soft constraints to specify preferred times for Activities.
  16. Create a pool of staff and assign one member to an Activity.
  17. Use stacking to create activities taught by more than one staff member, using resources for part of the semester, and for 3 concurrent sessions.
  18. Create new templates for printing data from Syllabus Plus.
  19. Prepare a spreadsheet for uploading data into Syllabus Plus.
  20. Solve scheduling problems.
  21. Create ad hoc bookings for non-teaching Activities.
