Most devices these days will work on the Universities wireless network, however some still do not support our authentication method. It always pays to check before spending your money. Below is some information to help you decide, please contact us if you have any questions about the device you are looking into.

Specifications to Look out for
It's not always easy to detail this as vendors are known to detail the same thing in different ways on their packaging. Below are the things to look for

  • 802.11g (must have) 802.11agn (recommended)
  • WPA/WPA2-Enterpirse
  • dot1x or 802.1x

Computers
All Windows, Mac OS X and recent Linux OS versions support the wireless network and any laptop built in the last 5 years with an inbuilt wireless card will also support our network. If you need to purchase an external USB wireless dongle there are many options available. TS have tested recent Linksys, Belkin, D-link and Netgear solutions with no issues. Our preference has been Linksys for quality and price.
These can be purchased from the Universities IT equipment provider Datacom PH:72217900 or email: uofa@datacom.com.au

Mobile Devices
All recent mobile devices from well known companies support the wireless network including, Apple iPhone/iPad, Android (HTC/Samsung), Nokia and Blackberry.

Some less common devices are known to have issues, please see the list below for devices known to have problems

Known Problem Devices
These do not work with our wireless network

  • Amazon Kindle

There are no known safety issues with the wireless equipment used by The University of Adelaide which is used in accordance with national regulations and installation guidelines. Detailed information about wireless networks and health, and about the wireless equipment the University uses, is available.

The energy of the University's wireless LAN is 1/20th that of a mobile phone handset. The University's wireless equipment is normally several meters from any workstation which is considered to be safe according to the Australian guidelines and regulations. Compare that to somebody on a mobile phone call nearby - that is producing a much greater (but still considered safe) amount of radiated microwave energy.

The reason for this is that Windows 2000 does not support WPA encryption (security/authentication method) and additional software is required for successful connection to the 'UofA' network. Each laptop vendor provides different software that can be installed to allow Windows 2000 devices to connect; you will need to visit your Vendors page to find what is required. Please visit our support page for any assistance.

You may need to manually download and install the certificate. This can be done by clicking on the link below. Different operating systems can also display this certificate differently and the certificate may show up as "Go Daddy Class 2 Certificate Authority" or http://www.valicert.com/.

The certificate can be trusted provided the error message detail contains the text "The server "radius.adelaide.edu.au" presented a valid certificate issued by "Go Daddy Class 2 Certification Authority" or "ValiCert, Inc", but "Go Daddy Class 2 Certificate Authority" is not configured as a valid trust anchor for this profile."
