Connecting a personally owned computer to the network

Sometimes visitors or other people need to connect their personally owned computers to the University network. The network connection granted will enable the user to connect to the Internet, access Web Mail and print to a network printer via IP. If you have a personally owned computer there are a number of means of connecting to the University network:

  • If you have a wireless-enabled portable computer, and wish to gain access to the university's wireless network, see Wireless Networking.
  • If you are bringing a personally owned computer into your office, and wish for it to have a permanent, wired network connection, see Use of Personal Computer on the Network.
  • If you wish to obtain access to the University Network from home see the information about the Staff Dialup Service.

Personal computer wired network connections

The connection of personally owned computers to the University network is offered via ITS with the following conditions:

  1. The computer must meet the University defined minimum Operating System and Hardware requirements.
  2. The computer must have the minimum Virus Protection Level and Patch Level. Datacom Systems SA will install this software to meet these standards for a fee of $60 per hour.
  3. The business area must complete either
  4. If the computer is not already configured to connect to a network, then an additional fee may apply and will be charged by Datacom Systems SA.
  5. If access to a University File Server is required, then the area manager needs to consider if the person requiring the connection is going to become a staff member or if they are a visitor only. If they are going to be a staff member, then the area must complete the standard procedures for a new staff member which will result in the appropriate IT accounts being created automatically.
  6. If the person is a visitor only for a short period of time, then the area will need to complete the "Authorisation for visitor access to IT services" form available from the Information for University IT Staff section of the ITS home page and fax it to the ITS Helpdesk via: 8303 5775. While the computer is being connected to the network and inspected for meeting the minimum requirements, the Patchlink agent will be installed.  This allows for Operating System and virus updates to be delivered automatically to the system. ITS regularly scans the network for computers that do not meet minimum patch levels and therefore expose the University network to attacks. If a personally owned computer is identified, it may be immediately disconnected from the network.

    Costs

Datacom will install the minimum Virus Protection Level and Patch Level software to meet the University standards for a fee of $60 per hour. Users that require onsite patching by a technician will be charged at the same rate (North Terrace and Waite; Roseworthy will incur additional travel costs).
