You will be expected to contribute to the development of this new Centre and to use this opportunity to achieve independence in research funding.
The Centre is a new development made possible through the generous support of the Freemasons Foundation, and based at the University of Adelaide. The candidate will join a growing, multidisciplinary team of world renowned researchers and enjoy significant opportunities to collaborate with researchers from across Australia and internationally.
Initially, the Centre’s research program is based on existing research strengths in aspects of men’s health including ageing, obesity and diabetes, prostate cancer, reproductive health, masculinities and sport, and health services. We have members engaged in a range of research projects including a longitudinal cohort study, health services research, qualitative studies, basic science research and clinical trials. The Centre is actively extending its research program by recruiting new members and securing additional funds. Possible relevant areas of research interest include chronic disease, health promotion, health behaviour change, injury, mental health, engagement with health services, and molecular epidemiology.
(Level B) $70,075 - $83,215 per annum.
To assist you in building an independent research program, we will fund a Post-doctoral Research Fellow to work directly with the candidate for at least one year and provide a $20,000 cash grant.
Plus an employer superannuation contribution of 17% applies.
This fixed-term position is available immediately for an initial period of 2 years with potential to renew for a further 3 years (ie a total of 5 five years funding is available subject to satisfactory performance).
Please refer to the selection criteria (pdf 24kB) or alternatively email Ms Anne Hayes or telephone: +61 (08) 8222 4228.
Men are more likely to die prematurely across all age groups – life expectancy is five years lower for males than females. The total burden of disease and injury is 10% higher for men than women. There is a significant burden of undetected disease and low levels of health literacy among Australian men.
The Freemasons Foundation Centre for Men’s Health was started in 2007 to bring together a critical mass of researchers and practitioners interested in addressing health from a male gender perspective. Over the next five years we intend to extend our comprehensive and multidisciplinary research program significantly, developing a men’s health service designed to provide gender-specific health assessments and health promotion programs, and cultivating talented early career researchers within the field of men’s health.
The Centre is supported by a Scientific Advisory Committee comprised of 10 leaders from various disciplines relevant to men’s health. Our Board of Patrons is comprised of 20 leaders of industry, media and culture, sports, and government. You can learn more about the Centre by viewing our website.
