Mori Tatsuya, Japanese documentary film-maker

In this special session, well-known documentary film-maker and social commentator Mori Tatsuya will present some of his award-winning work and discuss its social context.

Mori Tatsuya, born in Hiroshima in 1956, graduated from Rikkyo University in 1980. As a student, he belonged to the students' film production circle "Rikkyo SPP" and collaborated with Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who is now one of the most popular young film directors in Japan. In 1989, Mori started work with a television production company, with which he made more than 40 television specials. In October 1995, he began work on a documentary about the notorious religious cult, Aum Shinrikyo. In January 1998, he completed his documentary film: "A". The film was hailed as a critical success, portraying both the humanity and the inhumanity of ordinary cult members. The film was followed with "A2" (2001), tracing the lives of cult members several years later. His films have been screened at film festivals in Berlin, Hong Kong, Pusan, and Vancouver.
