Workshops and RoundtablesJapan’s Vision of An East Asian Community: Responses from AsiaConvenor: Professor Purnendra Jain, University of Adelaide In the last 10 years or so proposals to form an East Asian community have come from a number of Asian countries. Although it has not yet been institutionalised as disagreements prevail over its aims and membership, an East Asian Summit will be held in Malaysia in December 2005 to which all ASEAN+3 member states will participate. Japan has expressed its desire to open the membership to such countries as India and Australia while China and Malaysia seem to be reluctant to open the membership beyond ASEAN+3, at least for the first summit. The Roundtable that brings together scholars and analysts from a range of Asian countries will discuss and debate the aims, objectives and the likelihood of such an organisation and its implications for regional politics and foreign policy.
