University of Adelaide Grants

e-Learning Development Grants

The following projects received e-Learning Development Grant funding in 2013:

  • Blogging to build transferable reflective learning capabilities

Universities today aspire, in their graduate attribute statements, to enact students' ability to self-produce and self-develop knowledge that enables ongoing, lifelong learning. In this project, we aim to help achieve this aspiration with a pedagogically viable strategy which builds student capacity for reflective learning in a Japanese language course context. Students in Japanese 3A & 3B (S1, n=80; S2, n=70) will engage in three blogging activities using a MyUni blog.
The students will be assessed not only on the viability, number and regularity of their blog postings, but also on their reflective elements in all three activities in a scaffolded online Japanese blogging environment.

Project leader: Ms Kayoko Enomoto, School of Social Sciences

  • Development of Pharmacology learning tools to be used on tablet devices, Macs and PC's

The aim of this project is to create a suite of small software programs to be used on tablet devices, Macs and PCs that replicate the experimental processes for creating a dose response curve. Students will be able to experiment with setting different parameters for a selection of experiments based on the structuure, pharmacology and innervations of the guinea pig ileum. These small 'learning objects' will be modular in nature, and thus can be easily inserted into any number of courses that would benefit from their inclusion.

Project leader: Dr Abdallah Salem, School of Medical Sciences

  • Flipping the classroom to enhance the first year student experience through the use of interactive learning technologies for student centric learning

This project will build on effective forms of pre-classroom learning activities to successfully 'flip the classroom' for first year students, allowing them to master key concepts at their own pace. It will embed, upscale and evaluate the flipped classroom approach within 6 courses across 5 first year programs in Health Sciences with varying cohort sizes. This project aligns with the University's strategy of using technology to enhance the student learning experience through student centric pedagogies. The team will identify, shortlist and trial a range of e-learning approaches to develop interactive online material for students prior to face-to-face classes, thereby flipping the traditional classroom into an inquiry based, collaborative learning environment where students can inquire about course content and test their skills by applying knowledge. All online resources developed will be embedded into MyUni, be platform agnostic and compatible with mobile devices.

Project leader: Ms Sophie Karanicolas, School of Dentistry

  • Interactive e-Learning Resources for Development of Diagnostic Abilities

An ability to diagnose and then solve problems is an essential learning outcome for science graduates, and in particular, for applied vocations such as veterinary medicine and agriculture. However, this often relies on an ability to source and analyse disparate information in that discipline quickly. This project will produce a set of interactive and integrated e-learning resources that develop and reinforce diagnosis pathways, with a particular emphasis on plant identification and plant health. Their impact on how students approach a problem and on their diagnostic ability will also be evaluated.

Project leader: Associat Professor Amanda Able, School of Agriculture, Food and Wine

  • Investigation of Self and Peer Assessment for Honours Research Projects using MyUni

This project uses e-learning technologies such as the 'Groups' and 'Create Assessment' features embedded in MyUni to conduct self and peer assessment (SPA) for group based Honours projects. 'Groups' in MyUni is used as a basis to assist SPA by monitoring group performance and tracking history of individual contributions to the project. Specific measurable rating guidelines for SPA are developed to fit 'Groups' and are then embedded into 'Create Assessment' for students to rate each other over the criteria to produce data. The produced data is then used to calculate individual contributions to the proiect for SPA.

Project leader: Dr Chengqing Wu, School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering

  • Using e-enhanced learning to develop foundational skills among law students

To develop 10 e-learning modules to develop foundational skills among law students. The modules will adress 5 topics:

    1. Legal writing
    2. Legal research
    3. Statutory interpretation
    4. Case analysis
    5. Legal ethics

The modules will utilise LAMS software, which facilitates engaged and interactive learning by students.

These topics correspond to Threshold Learning Outcomes (TLOs) endorsed by the Council of Australian Law Deans: TLO 1 Knowledge - topics 3 and 4; TLO 2 Ethics and Professional Responsibility - topic 5; TLO 3 Thinking Skills - topics 1 and 2; TLO 4 Research Skills - topic 2; TLO 5 Communication and Collaboration - topic 1.

Project leader: Anne Hewitt, Adelaide Law School
