Legal Compliance Framework

Legal and Risk has developed an University-wide Legal Compliance Framework for implementation in 2009.

This framework of systems, processes and governance activities, will enable those with compliance responsibilities, to more effectively and consistently manage compliance and risk.

The framework has been designed to foster a strong compliance culture at the University in order to provide assurances to Council that the risks posed by non-compliance with legislative and regulatory obligations are being addressed.

The framework development has involved not only consideration of the learning, teaching, research and commercial activities undertaken by the University, its controlled entities and associates, but also a consideration of the complex, diverse and multi-jurisdictional environment in which the University operates.

The framework applies to all University staff and addresses compliance with obligations imposed by legislation, regulations and mandated codes.

The main features are:

  • A Manager Compliance
  • Legal Content and legislative amendments, updates and support
  • RMSS system utilization for reporting
  • Annual certification process

What this means for the University

  • Protection from the risks of non-compliance
  • Protection and advancement of the University's reputation and pursuit of strategic goals
  • Assurances to Council and external bodies (eg Auditor General) that legal obligations are being identified and managed in a structured and consistent way
  • Formalisation of management responsibilities and recognition that obligations are institutional
  • Optimisation of resources and efficiency, by ensuring resources are committed to the highest priority risks and obligations

What this means for University personnel

  • Protection from personal sanctions and penalties arising from non-compliance
  • A practical, effective and supported framework for identifying and managing obligations
  • Centralised coordination and a streamlined approach to compliance
  • Added value and certainty for decision making and planning
  • More confident and better informed University personnel
