Welcome to the Elder Music Library

The Elder Music Library is located in the Hartley Building on Kintore Avenue, on the North Terrace Campus of the University.

The Elder Music Library came into existence on January 1, 2002 and incorporates mainly music and some other performing arts materials previously located in the Performing Arts Library at the University of Adelaide. The Performing Arts Library incorporated holdings from the the earlier Elder Music Library, the Barr Smith Library Music Collection and the Fulton Library of the South Australian College of Advanced Education. Recently, the Library of the Flinders Street School of Music also became part of the Elder Music Library.

Located within the Elder School of Music, the Library is one of four branch libraries of the Barr Smith Library, the main University library. With particular strengths in musical performance materials and musicology, the Library is one of the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

The Library provides seating capacity for eighty users including twenty one listening carrels with a full range of audio and video equipment. There are just under 30 000 books in the Library, around 450 journal titles (over 5400 journal volumes), over 120,000 music scores and around 22,000 sound recordings. Access is available in the Library to a number of appropriate CD ROM databases as well as other electronic and computerized information networks.
