How to borrow

On-site users

Personal borrowers should bring their library or ID card and the item/s to the Service Enquiries desk.
A date due receipt will be issued for each loan. You must return the book, or renew the loan period, on or before the due date.

Off-site users - PIRSA or SARDI

There is a delivery service available to off-site PIRSA or SARDI personnel.  Books will be sent by DX courier or posted to off-site personnel.  See document delivery for PIRSA/SARDI for information on how to request an item.

What and how many

Staff, PIRSA/SARDI, advanced level and undergraduate students and alumni may borrow books and bound journal volumes from the Waite collection and items from the Reserve collection.
You may also use your Library or ID Card for personal borrowing at the Barr Smith Library, the Law Library, the Elder Music Library and Roseworthy Campus Library. Lending conditions may vary.

You may have up to fifty items on loan at one time.

Borrowing times

Library opening hours are available here. The Waite Library Service Enquiries desk closes 5 minutes before closing time.

Reserve collection items may be borrowed on overnight loan from 4.00 pm Monday to Thursday and Sunday. They are due back at 9.00 am the next day.

Note: Loan periods and conditions may differ at the Barr Smith Library and the other branch libraries. All loan periods are subject to recall: ie loan period will be shortened to one week when required by another user.

Renewals

You may renew the loan of a book via the catalogue from MyLibrary or you can take it to the Service Enquiries desk before the due date.

You may also renew a loan by phone [call 8313 7312] -- quote the Library barcode number from your ID Card and the title of the book.

A loan may not be renewed if another user has requested the item.

Recalls

If the item you have on loan is requested by another user, the loan period is reduced to one week and you will be sent an email notice asking you to return it. Please make sure you check your University email address regularly.

Books recalled for the Reserve collection must be returned immediately.

Overdue items

If you have overdue items, you will receive reminder notices, then you will be sent an invoice for the cost of replacement of the item, plus a non-refundable handling charge of $30.00 (GST exempt) per item. High-use items, e.g. recalled or reserve items, will be invoiced quickly.

If you are planning to be absent from the University, please check your account under MyLibrary and return or renew the loan periods of items that will fall due during your absence. It will help us if you arrange for your mail to be monitored while you are on leave so that Library notices asking for the return of items that are urgently needed by another user, or for the Reserve collection, may be attended to promptly.

Returning books

Except for Reserve, items may be returned to any University of Adelaide library. Reserve items should be returned directly to the library from which they were borrowed.

Borrower's details

All registered library users have an account on the Library's system known as MyLibrary. You may use it to find out about your loans and requests.   There's a MyLibrary help page if you would like to know more.

Login to your account on the Library website through the MyLibrary option by typing in a valid username and password.
University of Adelaide staff and students should use their University ID and Password.
Other users should use their Library Barcode as Username, and Last Name as Password.

Requests

If the book you want is out on loan you may 'Request'  it. This means it will be kept for you at the Library Service Enquiries desk when it is returned and you will be informed when it is available for pick-up.

To request a book, find its record from Library Search and check if it is out on loan. If the copy you want is out, sign in and select Request and follow the instructions.
Full details are on a separate web page: How to Request that a book on loan be held for you.

When the book is returned from loan we will send you an email Library notice telling you that it available.

Full details of the borrowing rules are in section 4 of the Library rules
