Student Identity Card

When you enrol, the University issues you with a Student ID Card which has a Library barcode. The ID Card is also your Library Card.
If you lose your ID Card, report the loss immediately to Card Services at North Terrace Campus (telephone 8313 3363) -- loans made with it before it is reported lost will be your responsibility.
An ID Card may be used only by the person to whom it was issued.

How to borrow

Have your ID card with you when you want to borrow. The loan will be recorded on the Library's loan system.
The system requires the barcode on your ID Card to correctly record the loan,  so you can't borrow without it. A due date receipt will issued for each item borrowed. You must return the item, or renew the loan period, on or before the due date.

What and how many

Undergraduate students may borrow items from the Waite Library, the Barr Smith Library and from the other branch libraries, and may have on loan up to thirty items at a time.
Advanced level students and staff may have on loan up to fifty items at a time.

Borrowing times

Details of opening hours are here. The Waite Library Service Enquiries desk closes 5 minutes before closing time.

Reserve collection items may be borrowed on overnight loan from 4.00 pm Monday to Friday, and Sunday and are due back at opening time on the next day that the Library is open (eg a Reserve book borrowed overnight on Friday is due back on Sunday at 1pm).

Note:-- Loan periods and conditions may differ at the Barr Smith Library and the other branch libraries. All loan periods are subject to recall: ie loan period will be shortened to one week when required by another user.

Renewals

You may renew the loan of a book via the catalogue from the MyLibrary option or you can take it to the Service Enquiries desk before the due date.

You may also renew a loan by phone [call 8313 7312] -- quote the Library barcode number from your ID Card and the title of the book.

A loan may not be renewed if another user has requested the item.

Recalls

If the item you have on loan is requested by another user, the loan period is reduced to one week and you will be sent an email notice asking you to return it. Please make sure you check your University email address regularly.

Books recalled for the Reserve collection must be returned immediately.

Handling charge

If an item is kept beyond the date of the first and final overdue notice requesting its return, an invoice will be sent for the cost of replacement of the item, plus a non-refundable handling charge of $30.00 (GST exempt) per item.

Returning books

Most items may be returned to any University of Adelaide library.
Reserve items must be returned directly to the library from which they were borrowed.

Borrower's details

All registered library users have an account on the Library's system known as MyLibrary. You may use it to find out about your loans, requests and demerit points.   There's a MyLibrary help page if you would like to know more.

Login to your account via the catalogue through the MyLibrary option by typing in a valid username and password.
University of Adelaide students should use their University Username (e.g. "jsmith01" or "a1234567") and Password.
Other users should use their Library Barcode as Username, and Last Name as Password.

Requests

If the book you want is out on loan you may 'Request'  it. This means it will be kept for you at the Library desk when it is returned and you will be informed when it is available for pick-up.

To request a book, find its record on the catalogue and check if it is out on loan. If the copy you want is out, click on Requests and follow the instructions.
Full details are on a separate web page: How to Request that a book on loan be held for you.

When the book is returned from loan we will send you an email Library notice telling you that it available.

Demerit points

Fair and equitable sharing forms the basis of library borrowing.

Demerit points are allocated when items are not returned by the due date at a rate of two points per day (or part of a day), except for items borrowed from the Reserve collection where demerit points accrue at the rate of five per hour (or part of an hour). Recalled items will incur demerit points until all items are returned.

If you acccumulate sixty demerit points your borrowing privileges are withdrawn for seven days.
More details about the demerit points scheme are available.
Please ask staff at the Service Enquiries desk if you have any queries about demerit points.

Full details of the borrowing rules are in section 4 of the Library rules
