The services specified below are available to agriculture, aquaculture and fishing industries staff employed by the Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (including the South Australian Research & Development Institute). How to register with the Library

Approved staff of PIRSA/SARDI must register for a Library card (and barcode) to request document delivery services or to access electronic resources such as journals and databases.

Apply for registration during office hours at the Services Desk of the Barr Smith Library, Waite Library or Roseworthy Campus Library.
Please bring with you:
  1. Proof of employment with PIRSA/SARDI (eg payslip or ID card)
    OR A letter of offer of employment stating contract expiry date
    OR A letter on letterhead requesting membership, giving name, dept. and address, email address, phone number and term of employment
  2. Download, print and complete a Waite Affiliated Registration form
If you are unable to visit the Library personally, you can fax the registration form and letter of offer/letter requesting membership to 08 8303 7103

Library orientation and user instruction

Library orientation tours and sessions on the range of information and services available from the Library can be provided on an individual or group basis. Advance notice is requested.
Offsite visits by the Waite Librarian can also be arranged for information sessions at individual sites.

Library catalogue

The University of Adelaide Library catalogue is available via the Web and will work with any browser.

The catalogues of the three South Australian universities, the State Library of South Australia and the National Bibliographic Database are available from here

Borrowing from the Library

Staff as specified may borrow personally from any of the libraries in the Adelaide University Library system. Onsite borrowers may request intercampus loans from other campuses. Offsite borrowers should refer to the section on Document Delivery.

All  loans are checked out to the individual borrower's loan file. Borrowers are asked to observe the due date on the receipt slip (or on your My Library account) as demerit points accrue for overdue items. Renewals may be requested from the Library by phone or self-renewed using the catalogue (login to your My Library account) unless another user is waiting for the item.

Waite Library

Books: 50 items [10 week loan, 4 renewals] Loans may be recalled after 1 week if the book is requested by another user.
Journals are not for loan.

Roseworthy Campus Library

Books: 50 items [10 week loan, 4 renewals] Loans may be recalled after 1 week if the book is requested by another user.
Journals are not for loan.

Barr Smith Library

Books: 50 items [10 week loan, 4 renewals] Loans may be recalled after 1 week if the book is requested by another user.
Journals are not for loan.

Photocopying within the Library

To use the photocopiers in any of the University of Adelaide libraries, a re-loadable Copycard must be purchased from a dispensing machine or a departmental Copycard arranged (contact the Library for details).
Copy charges (includes GST) are:-
A4 copy / laserprint: 11 cents
A3 copy: 15 cents

Intercampus Service

What is it and who may use the service?

Registered borrowers may request the delivery of  items or photocopies required for the purposes of study and research from libraries located on other campuses of the University of Adelaide.

What may be requested?

  • Normal loan period books from the Main Collection
  • Scanned copies of journal articles and chapters of books
The following items are normally not available for loan:
  • Reserve Collection
  • Journal issues/volumes (unless available 'for loan as a book')
  • Reference Collection
  • Special Collections

How do I make a request?

Requesting a book: On-site personnel

  • Search for the item in the Library Catalogue
  • Click on the Requests link
  • If the status of the item is 'Available' select "Joint Store and Intercampus Request"
  • If the status of the item is 'On Loan' select "Recall"
  • Change the Pick up at: location box to the Library where you would like to collect the book (Barr Smith, Waite, Roseworthy, etc.)
  • An email notice will be sent to you when the item is ready for collection

Requesting a book: Off-site personnel

  • Requests should be made on the electronic request form.
  • Select "Off-site requester" as Type of Request
  • You must fill in a separate request form for each individual item.
  • Check the address on the form is correct; advise the Library if it needs updating.
  • Select a Library under Delivery instructions - Waite or Roseworthy
  • The book will be sent to you by DX courier where available, or Australia Post, from the Library you select.
  • We will send you a confirmation email copy of each request for your records.

Requesting a journal article: On-site personnel

  • Requests should be made on the electronic request form.
  • Select "Intercampus Request" as Type of Request
  • Journal articles will be emailed directly to the address you nominate on the Intercampus request form

Requesting a journal article: Off-site personnel

  • Requests should be made on the electronic request form.
  • Select "Off-site requester" as Type of Request
  • Journal articles will be emailed directly to the address you nominate on the request form


Charges

Loans
= no charge 
Journal articles = no charge for scanned articles. Photocopies and laser prints: $2.20 up to 20 pages or part thereof. Additional cost of $2.20 for faxed copies.

How long will it take?

Most requests are processed within the day of receipt at the Document Delivery Service. Turn around time varies according to the supplying library and availability but generally can be filled within 1-5 days.

Desktop (web) Delivery

Desktop delivery allows you to retrieve a scanned article direct from any Internet connected computer. 
When filling out the electronic request form, the default delivery option for photocopies is for Desktop Delivery, which requires you to have access to the Internet with a web browser, email and Adobe Acrobat software.  If you do not want this form of delivery click on the down arrow to the right of the box (i.e. My preferred delivery method is ) and change the default to either collect in person, mail or fax.

Extension of loans

If you require an extension on the loan period of items you have on loan you may:

  • use the self renewal option on the Library catalogue by using the MyLibrary option
  • phone Waite Library Service Enquiries (08) 8313 7312 or Roseworthy Library Service Enquiries on (08) 8313 7844
  • email Waite Document Delivery or Roseworthy Document Delivery citing your Library barcode number and item details.


You will be required to return any item required by another borrower or if you have used the maximum number of extensions allowed. Failure to renew or return items on time can result in the suspension of borrowing privileges and an invoice for the cost of a replacement. See Demerits Points information for further details.

What if there's a problem?


We will contact you by phone or email if there are any problems with your request or if the item cannot be sourced within the University of Adelaide Library.

How do I return items?

Waite Campus and Roseworthy Campus borrowers may return intercampus loan items at any University of Adelaide Library.Off-campus borrowers should securely wrap and address items to:

Interlibrary Service

What is it and who may use the service?

Registered PIRSA/SARDI borrowers may request items required for the purposes of study and research that are not held by the University of Adelaide Library.

  • Select "Inter-Library Request" as Type of Request
  • You must fill in a separate request form for each individual item.
  • We will send you a confirmation email copy of each request for your records.
  • Books can be collected from the Service Inquiries desks in the Barr Smith, Waite or Roseworthy Libraries.
  • The location for collection will be indicated on the email notification that will be sent to you.
Off-site personnel
  • Requests should be made on the electronic request form.
  • Select "Inter-Library requester" as Type of Request
  • You must fill in a separate request form for each individual item.
  • We will send you a confirmation email copy of each request for your records.
  • The book will be sent to you by DX courier where available, or Australia Post. The scanned journal article will be sent to your desktop.

How long will it take?

The delivery of documents from Australian and overseas sources varies between 3 days to 2 weeks depending on availability and mode of delivery.
Loans of items provided through the Document Delivery Service are subject to the conditions of the lending library. Such conditions may include restricted use within the Library only, a short loan period or no extensions. Please observe the due date marked on the Library label.

Borrowing from other S.A. university libraries

PIRSA/SARDI staff who have a University of Adelaide Library card can borrow personally from the libraries of Flinders University and/or the University of South Australia. Lending rights are restricted.

Demerit points

The Library operates on the basis of fair sharing of materials. Demerit points are allocated when items are not returned by the due date at a rate of two points per day (or part of a day).

If an item is recalled, then 10 demerit points will accrue per day the item is overdue.

Reserve collection items will accrue 5 demerit points per hour (or part of an hour).

Accumulation of sixty demerit points results in withdrawal of borrowing privileges for seven days.

The number of demerit points accumulated can be checked by using the MyLibrary option on the catalogue.

We aim to ensure off-site personnel are provided with the same quality of service enjoyed by those on-site. Document delivery and reference services are provided by the Waite and Roseworthy Libraries. For more information contact the Waite & Roseworthy Campus Librarian

Electronic databases

A number of databases have been licenced for remote access by PIRSA and SARDI staff who are registered users of the University of Adelaide Library.  See the links listed below.

NOTE: The majority of electronic resources available from the Library are governed by license agreements which allow access only for the purposes of non-commercial research, education or personal use. 

You can also search for the database title from the catalogue (use the Limit drop down box to limit your title search to electronic resources).

Resources available to PIRSA and SARDI staff will be indicated by a separate link for PIRSA and SARDI staff to click for access. If there is no link, the resource is not licensed for PIRSA/SARDI access.
You will be asked to enter your User ID (Library barcode) and Password (family name or last name). The link will go to a portal which will indicate the scope of the access available.

Remote off-site personnel who do not wish to or are not able to search the above databases or any other database, can request the Waite & Roseworthy Campus Librarian to do the searches for them.

A collection of peer-reviewed, full-text articles from more than 8000 journals with extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature, and other subject; intended primarily for academic researchers.

Academic Search Premier

Full text for more than 4,500 journals, including more than 3,600 peer-reviewed journals. In addition to the full text, indexing and abstracts are provided for all 8,144 journals in the collection. This database offers information in nearly every area of academic study including: computer sciences, engineering, physics, chemistry, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, ethnic studies and more. In additional to journal coverage, Academic Search Elite provides full text information from a variety of source-types such as scholarly monographs.

AGRICOLA

Includes over 3 million citations to material acquired by the U.S. National Agricultural Library and cooperating institutions. It is produced by the National Agricultural Library. Subjects included: agricultural economics; geography; agricultural engineering; home economics; animal science; human nutrition; chemistry; life sciences; energy; natural resources; entomology; plant diseases; cooperative extension; insect pests and their control; food science; rural sociology; forestry; veterinary medicine.

An Australian Bureau of Statistics small area agricultural commodity database on CD. The database is currently only available for searching in the Waite (1983-2002) or Roseworthy (1996-2002) libraries. Searches can be requested by contacting the Waite & Roseworthy Campus Librarian

AHB: Australian heritage bibliography
Formerly HERA, this bibliographic database indexes and abstracts articles from published and unpublished material on Australia's natural and cultural environment. Source documents include journal articles, unpublished reports, books, videos and conference proceedings from many different sources around Australia. Emphasis is placed on reports written or commissioned by government and non-government heritage agencies throughout the country.

ANR-Index
An Australian government initiative produced by Infoscan. Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (on Cambridge Scientific Abstracts):

Part 1: Biological Sciences and Living Resources (ASFA 1)
ASFA 1 provides extensive coverage of basic and applied research on aquatic organisms. All aspects of marine, freshwater, and brackish water organisms and environments are examined. Oceanic Abstracts
Oceanic Abstracts is focused exclusively on worldwide technical literature pertaining to the marine and brackish-water environment. The database focuses on marine biology and physical oceanography, fisheries, aquaculture, non-living resources, meteorology and geology, plus environmental, technological, and legislative topics. Periodicals Index Online
Articles published in over 4,500 periodicals in the humanities and social sciences. Covers 37 key subject areas in the humanities and social sciences and offers vast variety within these subject areas. Periodicals Index Online currently indexes over 15 million articles going as far back as 1665 and every article in each journal is indexed, from volume 1 issue 1 to recent times. Over three centuries of scholarly publication in 40 languages and dialects are indexed, including English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and other Western languages. Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection

A comprehensive database providing nearly 575 full text publications, including 550 peer-reviewed journals. The database covers topics such as emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods. PsycINFO
PsycINFO, from the American Psychological Association (APA), contains nearly 2.3 million citations and summaries of scholarly journal articles, book chapters, books, and dissertations, all in psychology and related disciplines, dating as far back as the 1800s. 97 percent of the covered material is peer-reviewed. The database also includes information about the psychological aspects of related fields such as medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, anthropology, business, law and others.

Scirus searches over 167 million science-specific Web pages, enabling you to quickly pinpoint scientific, scholarly, technical and medical data on the Web and  find the latest reports, peer-reviewed articles and journals that other search engines miss.

Scopus
Scopus and Web of science are large databases covering science and other subjects and allowing cited reference searching (finding articles that have cited a given article). The 1980 onwards date range of Web of science makes it the more useful database for cited reference searching.
Scopus and Web of science can also be searched by topic but they lack the depth of coverage of a biological database such as Biosis previews.

VITIS-VEA (Viticulture and enology abstracts)
An international English-language literature database in the field of viticulture and enology. It contains information from all over the world and corresponds to the "VITIS - Viticulture and Enology Abstracts" (scientific reviews) and "Informationsdienst praxisbezogener Literatur im Weinbau" (technical reviews) in print. The database covers about 60% more citations than the printed versions and provides bibliographic data, keywords and abstracts in English (or, in German, see below). Scientific articles on the fields: morphology, physiology, and biochemistry of grapevines; soil science; genetics and grapevine breeding; phytopathology and grapevine protection; cellar techniques; economics of viticulture and enology; enology; microbiology of wine. In addition, since 1994: Technical articles from German language journals (abstracts in German).

Victorian Primary Industries and Environment (Library) Catalogue produced by the Knowledge and Information Branch of the Victorian Department of Primary Industries, is a bibliographic database that indexes and abstracts books, reports, theses, video recordings, maps, manuscripts and pictorial matter in the Knowledge Resource Centre at Werribee and small regional collections of the Department of Primary Industries and the Department of Sustainability and Environment. Formerly called ELIXIR.
VPI&E Catalogue includes records for publications from specialist collections in agriculture, mineral resources, conservation and land management/planning.

Web of Science (Institute for Scientific Information)
Comprising Science Citation Index; Social Sciences Citation Index; Arts and Humanities Citation Index.
Web of Science indexes a wide range of journal articles in all fields. As well as standard topic searches, it allows searches for articles that have cited a given author, article, book or other item.

Electronic journals and books

The full text of a large number of electronic journals and books are available via the Library catalogue. Due to site licence conditions, not all electronic journals are available to staff of PIRSA/SARDI.

Enter the title of the journal or book in Basic Search (use the Quick limit to limit the search to Electronic resources) then select the appropriate record.
Resources available to PIRSA and SARDI staff will be indicated by a separate link for PIRSA and SARDI staff to click for access. If there is no link, the resource is not licensed for PIRSA/SARDI remote access.
On-campus staff can access most resources from the public access PCs in any of the University of Adelaide Libraries.
You will be asked to enter your User ID (Library barcode) and Password (family name or last name). The link will go to a portal which will indicate the scope of the access available.

The development of the collection is the responsibility of the Waite & Roseworthy Campus Librarian. Recommendations for additions to the collection are welcome from PIRSA/SARDI staff.
