Library Card

The University issues students with a Student Identity Card at the time of enrolment. The card has a Library barcode on it so that it can be used as a Library Card. Members of the academic staff and other Library users are issued with a Library Card from the Card Centre on the Hughes Plaza.

If you lose your ID Card or Library Card report the loss immediately to the Library - you are responsible for all books borrowed with it.  An ID Card or Library Card may only be used  by the person to whom it was issued. A replacement card cost $25.

Locating Material

To find a book, journal, score or record you must first use the catalogue to find the call number of the item. Call numbers are usually in two parts; the classification number which reflects the subject content of the item, and the Cutter number which is usually based on the composer's or author's name  or the title of a journal. The two together provide a unique number for every item in the Library. This number determines the item's position on the shelves.

In the Elder Music Library there are various collections of material; details of some of which  are  briefly outlined below.  There is also a floor plan of the Library which identifies the location of the various collections. The collection is specified before the call number. Typical collection names,  call numbers and Cutter numbers are:

Elder Music Library Main Collection 784.09  H673

Elder Music Library Compact Disc   784.2184 B414

Elder Music Library Miniature Score 783.14  S913 1

You must have all of this information to locate an item in the Library.

Collections

The Library's collection comprises books, journals and music scores in various formats as well as audio and video recordings all related to the performing arts.

Main Collection   - Books and journals.

Reference Collection - Dictionaries, encyclopaedias, indexes, abstracts and other reference texts. Reference Collection items are not available for loan.

Performing Scores - Instrumental and vocal scores in a format suitable for performance.

Miniature Scores - Scores not primarily intended for performance, with type reduced in size.

Monumenta -   Multi volume composers' collected works,  historical and monumental sets.  Only available for loan to academic staff and advanced level students.

Recorded Disc - Analogue discs (LP records) shelved in two sequences in the listening area.

Compact Disc - Digital discs - empty cases shelved at the end of the Main Collection. Take the empty case to the Loans Desk to get the disc.  Only two discs may be borrowed at any one time by undergraduate students and five for advanced students and academic staff.

Reserve Collection -  Books, scores and photocopied articles from journals  in high demand.  Normally placed in Reserve at the request of a lecturer.   Reserve Collection items are available at the Loans Desk.  Two items may be borrowed at a time for three hours to use in the Library. Two Reserve Collection books may be borrowed for overnight use one hour before the Library closes. Items borrowed overnight are due back in the Library immediately on the next day that the Library is open.  Never leave a Reserve item unattended in the Library - it remains your responsibility while it is on loan to you.

Catalogues

Most items in the Elder Music Library may be found by looking in the Computer Catalogue; there are seven computers in various parts of the Library which will provide access to the Computer Catalogue.

Electronic Databases

Electronic journal indexes are available through the computers in the Library. From the Elder Music Library webpage follow the links to Internet Resources. The three main indexes for music materials are Music Index, International Index to Music Periodicals and RILM Abstracts. On the same page is a link to JStor which provides access to the full text, in electronic format, of some music journals.

How to get help

If you have a question about any aspect of the Library and its resources, ask at the Loans Desk. If you have queries related to locating information for essays or assignments ask to speak to one of the librarians

Borrowing

How to Borrow
Take the items you wish to borrow and your Library Card to the Loans Desk. The loan will be recorded in the computer and the due dateprinted on a receipt. Keep the receipt with the item to ensure you return or extend the item the item at the appropriate time. You must return the item, or extend the loan, on or before the due date. You must have your Library Card or ID Card with you to borrow from the Library.

Holds
If the item you want is already out on loan (you can find this out by looking at the Copy Status screen) you may place a HOLD on the item by typing in your ID number. This means that it will be kept for you when it is returned  and the Library will let you know when it is available.

Returning Items
Items on loan can be returned through the chute inside the Library at the Loans Desk.  There is an after hours return chute on the right side of the front door to the Library.  Wherever possible avoid returning Compact Discs through the chutes as their cases are fragile and damage easily.

To extend the loan of an item, take it to the Loans Desk before the due date. You may extend a loan by telephone (8303 3685) - quote the Library barcode number from your ID Card and the barcode number of the item. A loan cannot be extended if another user is waiting for the item. If another user places a HOLD on an item for which you have had an extension, you will be asked to return it immediately; if the item is on  a four-week loan to an advanced level student, the loan period will automatically be reduced to two weeks.

Demerit Points

Fair sharing of materials is the basis on which the Library operates. Demerit points are allocated when items are not returned by the due date at a rate of two points per item per day, except for items from the Reserve Collection where demerit points accrue at a rate of  four  points per hour. If you accumulate sixty demerit points your borrowing privileges are withdrawn for fifteen days.

Confidentiality of Loan Records

At the time of enrolment you will be asked to specify whether you wish Library loan records to remain private or whether details relating to specific books on loan to you may be given to another Library user. If somebody needs to consult urgently a book that is on loan to you, your name and contact department will be disclosed only if you have previously given your permission.

Photocopiers

Two photocopiers are available in the Library. They operate by means of a reusable  card. A card dispensing machine is located adjacent to the photocopiers.  For each copy you make the appropriate amount of credit will automatically be deducted from your card.  Copying must finish 10 minutes before closing time.
