Finding further information

Using the Library Catalogue
1) to find other books with the same subject headings as those on your reading list
- go to the Library Home page
- type the title of the known book in the search bar
- from the full record for that title, scroll down the grey column to Subject Heading(s):
- click on the heading to the right that suits your topic, eg. Historic buildings South Australia.
- from the list of headings that is presented, click on the heading that best suits your query

2) to find books on a topic, use the Keyword search option
- go to the Library Home page
- at the box under quick search scroll down and select Keyword

- think of words you would expect to find in the Title or Subject Heading for the book to be useful to you
- type these words in the search bar, with the word and in between each search word, eg.  historic  and  building  and  adelaide  (and is a command to the computer which tells it to find any records which include all of your search terms).
- improve your search by
-- adding the truncation symbol ? to pick up different endings to a word, such as singular and plural, eg. historic  and  building?  and  adelaide
-- add alternative word for a concept.  It is most important that you separate alternative words with  or ,  AND that you enclose these words in brackets, eg.
(historic  or  heritage  or  conservation)  and  building?  and  adelaide

Scanning the shelves in the BSL Main Collection in relevant Dewey numbers
It is more efficient to search the Catalogue to see what ought to be where, but sometimes you may want to see what is on the shelves. There is no handy Dewey Classification Number for the concept of conservation.  Conservation issues are found as aspects of a number of topics.  The table below lists some of the more widely-used numbers.
