SEARCHING
The default search is Find
Terms:
Anywhere, a keyword option which looks for the selected
words
adjacent to each other, such as in a phrase.
-
If you want individual keywords from anywhere in the record, type
AND between your search terms.
-
When you want to find records containing any of the alternative words
for
a concept, enclose the words in round brackets with OR
typed between each term.
-
Use an asterisk * for truncation to collect plurals and alternative
endings
for a word stem.
Type your search terms in the search bar and click on Search
eg -
adelaide AND
(heritage
OR conservation) AND (building* OR
structur*)
DISPLAY
The first 10 records of the result of your search appear below the
search
bar, presented in the default display format, which gives
bibliographical
details; title of article, the author's name, journal title, volume,
issue
number, date and page numbers.
At the double arrowhead icon <>
click on the right arrowhead >
for the next records, the left arrowhead <
for the previous records, or Go To
Record
number.
To view the full record, including the
Architect:, Abstract; subject headings

return to the search screen.
MODIFY A SEARCH strategy for more specific results
When you want to modify a search strategy click on Search
or go to Search History
to get a list of previous searches. Click on the icon under
Display to see the results for that search.
One useful feature of ARCH is the ability to combine
the
results of previous searches by using the set number instead of
re-typing
a search strategy.
-
You can combine sets by typing the set numbers with the appropriate
Boolean
operator, eg.
#3(set number)
AND
#7(set number).
-
You can make a set more specific by adding additional search terms, eg.
#1(set number)
AND
(landscape* OR garden*) AND south australia*
Advanced search
allows you to restrict terms to a specific field. In ARCH
this is particularly useful as a way of finding articles about an
individual
architect, firm or project, or finding articles which include
illustrations.
Select Architect(AR)
as a field and type the name of architect or firm a search bar, eg.
christine vadasz
Select Notes(NT)
as a field to restrict the search to articles which include elevations,
graphics, illustrations, photos, plans, etc. Add the asterisk at
the end of the search term to pick up singular and plural, eg.
photo*
Select Project(PRO)
as a field and type the name of project, building or place in the
search
bar, eg.
leigh street
To find articles with words from two separate fields, such as plans of
projects in Adelaide, use the both search bars, eg.
plan* in
Notes(NT)
AND
adelaide in
Project(PRO)
Using Advanced
allows
you find articles from a previous search result which have a particular
form of illustration, architect or location. So, to find only those
articles
from a set which have photographs, in the first search bar
type
photo* and select
Notes(NT) In the second bar type the set number for
the previous search leaving the default at
(Terms anywhere) , eg.
photo* in
Notes(NT)
AND
#2
in (Terms anywhere)
Alternatively, type a Boolean search in the second bar, eg.
plan*
in
Notes(NT)
AND
(energy
OR solar) AND hous*
in
(Terms anywhere)
The Index
provides
an alphabetical list of terms in the free text fields. Type in a
word to bring up a sequence of words and phrases beginning with the
search
term.
Click on the appropriate term(s) to retrieve a list of records which
include your search term(s). Alternatively, click in the small
box
to the left of the list to mark the words or phrases you want
searched.
Click on Search Marked.
To run your search in another
database in the AUSTROM or HERITAGE &
ENVIRONMENT group, click on
Change
to get to the list of databases, mark the box(es) to select the
appropriate
database(s), then click on Start
Searching.
Now click on Search History
to view the list of your searches in the previous database and click
on
Rerun for the appropriate search strategy to find records
in the newly selected databases.
If you wish to see the results of the search strategy for each
database,
mark the box to Display results by
database.
