Searching Art abstracts - a few hints

These notes are not exhaustive! They are designed to supplement the introductory Library session, as an aid to remind you of search techniques you could try when you need information for papers and essays. Art abstracts available from the EBSCO database service, indexes the contents of art journals from 1984 to date. The more recent records include an abstract. This is an international index, many of the articles are not in English, and many will not be available in Adelaide. Click here to go to ArtIndex.

 

SEARCHING

At the Find: bar type words to describe your topic using Keyword search techniques. Type AND between each word you want to be found; if you have alternative words for a concept, type OR between each word and enclose the words separated by 'OR' in brackets. Where there could be different endings to a word, such as singular and plural, use the asterisk * as the truncation symbol. Click Search to create a list of brief records for items containing your keywords, eg.

cubis* AND (paint* OR sculpt*)

DISPLAY

From the Results list click on an article title to see the Title: (of the article) Author: Source: (title of the journal, volume and page numbers of the article) and Descriptors: (words describing the topic of the article). Click on one of the Descriptors: to bring up a list of the other articles which share that subject, eg.

Art and politics -- France -- 20th century

Above the full record, click on Result List: to return to the list of articles in brief record format.

To create a subset of relevant references, click on the Add box in the right-hand columnfor each useful looking title. When you have finished selecting records, Click on Folder has items. to see the list of titles collected.

Modify a search
Above the full record click on Refine Search to bring up the Find: bar with your existing search strategy. Modify this strategy as necessary, eg.

cubis* AND (paint* OR sculpt*) AND (france OR spain)

OUTPUT

The Print, E-mail and Save options appear above the full record. From the brief records list you need to click on the folder in the right-hand column to Add useful references to the Folder. Click on the Folder has items. icon on the right-hand side above the list of articles, to get the the Result List Items and the Print, E-mail and Save to Disk options. The default format includes the full record from Art abstracts and the full text where available. Click on the links to return to your search results. Your e-mail address is retained during the search session.

- if you want to see what articles were written prior to 1984, you need to use the printed

Provides an international coverage of journal articles on all aspects of art. Particularly useful for contemporary comment.
Subject headings include the names of artists and movements, themes and techniques. See under Art, Nineteenth century and Art, Twentieth century for lists of subject headings for specific art Movements of the time. In addition, the sub-heading Reproductions is used where these appear in an article.
Abbreviations used for journal titles are given at the front of each volume.
