Searching Avery Index

AVE:Avery index to architectural periodicals.  1880-
Also available in print form  Reference collection 720.5 A95.2 up to 1997
From the Getty Information Institute and the Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library, Columbia University,  AVE indexes more than 2000 journal titles on architecture, urban and landscape design as well as in related areas of archaeology, historic preservation, interior design and American local history, from the late 19th century to date.  The earlier papers are useful for contemporary comment on an architect, building, movement or theory.

SEARCHING

The default search is by  Keyword, type significant words to describe your topic in the search bar, then click on  Search.  The system assumes the  AND  operator between words typed in a search bar; use a question mark ? for truncation.

DISPLAY

The results are presented in a  List   of the first 25 titles from your search, in date order, with the most recent articles first.  Click on  Author  or   Title  at the top and bottom of the list to re-arrange the list alphabetically.   This sorting function is not available with large sets.

Click on the right > or left < arrowhead to move to the next or previous page of results.

There are three ways to get details of individual articles -

Display one record by clicking on the title
Display all on this page by clicking on  Brief   or  Full

Display selected records by checking those you want and choosing Brief or Full.
The check box is the small box to the left of a title, click in the box to select the title.  To select all of the titles on that page, click on  Check All  (at the top and bottom of the results list).  This is a useful short cut if your set is small.

Additional notes on DISPLAY

From exact searches Author, Title, Subject or Journal Title the search result is a  List   of Authors names, of Titles, of Subject headings or of Journal titles.
These lists are arranged in alphabetical order with the closest match to your search term appearing highlighted at line 3.

To get details of the individual articles which have these names or headings,
first, click in the check box to the left of relevant names or headings,
then, click on  Brief  or Full  to bring up a list of articles with these  Authors names, or article Titles, or Subject headings or  Journal titles..
 

FORMATS
The  Full  format gives details of the article  Title:,  Physical Details:   such as plans, illustrations, photographs, drawings, models, charts, diagrams, etc., which journal the article is   In:  with the date, volume number, and page numbers; provides  Notes:   about the content of the article, and links to  articles by   Other Authors:    and   Subjects:
At the Full  format you can make selections from the list by clicking on  Save  (at the right hand side of each record, above the title).  Click on Close Window    to return to the results.
To look at the records you have selected during the session, click on  Saved   at the top right hand side of the blue heading bar.

The  Brief  display gives details of the article title and author(s); and notes on physical features such as plans, illustrations, photographs, drawings, models, charts, diagrams, etc. and the title of the journal in which the article appears, with the date, volume number, and page numbers.   There may be a link to   Abstract/Summary   a separate screen giving the same information as in the Notes:  section of the   Full   format.
In the  Brief  display, select individual titles by clicking on the box next to each title which looks useful.  From the top or bottom of the screen    Display as:   List   or   Full.     Your selections will now appear in the List    or  Full   format.

To  Save  selected records you need to be in the Full  format.

OUTPUT

The   Email   or   Print   options are available from the top and bottom of the   List   of results.   The default  Preferences   are to email, print or download records in the   Full   format, with the most recent records shown first.
Click on    Print   to bring up a new window of your results, then Go to the  File  menu on this page and click   Print,   Send  to e-mail, or    Save As to download,  using the functions of your Web Browser.
Click on    Email    to    Send e-mail to:   your account.  Once you have typed in your e-mail address, this will remain as the preference for the search session.
If you need to look at the records you have selected, before using Print,   Send  to e-mail, or    Save As to download,  click on   Saved    in the blue bar across the top of the screen.  You can delete records you no longer need at this stage.

Click on the right > or left < arrowheads to go to the following or previous titles, or Jump to record #   by typing a record number in the box, then click on  Go.
 

Additional notes on OUTPUT

Setting Preferences
Click on    Preferences    in the blue bar across the top of the screen to set your preferred defaults for the session.  At   Eureka Preferences for this Session    the template allows you to
set the format in which to  Email, print, download records
set an address to    Send e-mail to:
specify the order to   Sort results by:     and to
set the format to    Display multiple records as:
Save your results on Eureka
Click on   Save This Set   to open a new window and transfer records as a file on the Eureka system.
Select a password for your saved set and provide a name. If you want your saved set to be private and to avoid accidental updates to it, select a password that only you know, and which would not be easily guessed or needed by others.

Click on   Show Saved Sets   to view a list of saved sets.   Select a saved record set name:    to view the results.   Use the search bar   To find sets saved with another password:  then click on Search.

To look at sets you have saved on Eureka, click on   Saved  in the blue bar at the head of the screen, then click on   View previously saved records stored with a password.    At Search for records saved for this password:   type your password in the search bar, click on   Search,  to display a   List   of the results of the set.
 

MODIFY your search results

EXTEND a search by clicking on a link (words in blue and underlined) in a  Full  record to get a list of the other titles that share the same Title: or Other Authors: or Subjects:

NARROW a search by clicking on  Limit, above the results display, to restrict the results of a set by  Date, by  Language or to a Country of Publication.   When you have made your selection(s) click on   Apply limit  to bring up the list of titles remaining, which reflect the limits you imposed.

Lots of ways of getting better results from AVE

Use a different SEARCH option
The default search engine in the new  Eureka has six search options, select the search option that is best suited to your needs.
Keyword - Type words from an author's name, a title, or a subject heading.
 The words found will come from one author's name, or one title, or one subject heading.
  Example:  carson  pirie  scott

Author - Type a person's name, last name first, or the first words of an organization's name.
  Example:  eisenman, peter
To search effectively in this search option you need  to know the way a name is listed in the Avery index.  When in doubt use Author Word

Title Word - Type distinctive words from a title.
  Example:  alberti    building

Subject Word - Type a few distinctive words from a Subject heading.
  Example:  office   architecture   metropolitan

Abstract Word - Type significant words that might appear in the Notes field.
  Example:  house x

Journal - Type the exact title of a journal, beginning with the first word.
  Example:  architectural review

In each of the  Word  searches, the system assumes the AND operator between the search terms.

Use a different SEARCH engine
Advanced Search offers a number of different functions that can help improve your search strategy.  There are three more search options for -

Author Word - Type distinctive words from a person's or an organisation's name in any order.  The system assumes the  AND operator between the words.
  Example:  herzog   meuron
This is a very handy feature when you don't know the exact form of the name used in the Avery index.

Title  - Type the exact title of an article or paper beginning with the first word but omitting initial articles (A, An, The, Gli, L').
  Example:   thinking the present

Subject  - Type distinctive words from a subject heading,
  Example:   postmodernism - influence
  [note that there must be a space before and after the single hyphen before the subheading]


COMBINE search terms
Advanced Search allows two groups of search terms, from different fields, to be combined with Boolean operators And, Or, And Not.
Select the field for the search in each column, type appropriate search words in each search bar, then select the desired Boolean operator.  Click on Search.
  Example:
 (Title Word)     state street
  • And

  •  (Subject Word)   department stores


    Advanced Search provides for the searching of alternative words for a concept, using the OR operator
      Example:

     (Keywords)          garden?
  • Or

  • (Subject Words)    landscape

    COMBINE search sets
    Click on   Previous Searches   to display a list of the searches done in your session. Combine result sets by clicking on the box next to the relevant set number, then click on Combine.
     Example
    4    Keyword  harvey                            179 Records
    3    Subject        Postmodernism          310 Records
    The   AND  operator is implied when sets are combined.

            Records for FIND Search 4 AND Search 3  sorted by date author title
             Display one record by clicking onthe title, all on this page by choosing Brief or Full, or selected records by checking those you want and choosing Brief or Full.

    REFINE the result of a search
    When you get a large number of titles from your search, consider adding more search terms to your search strategy.
    At the   List   of titles, click on    Refine   to  get the  Advanced Search  bars.
    Select the field for the search in each column, type appropriate search words in each search bar, then select the desired Boolean operator.  Click on Search.
      Example:

     (Keyword)     solar
  • Or

  •  (Keyword)      wind
    The Refine option processes the search against the titles resulting from your previous search.
      Example
    3     Search      1   AND  Search      2               3  Records
                 2     Keyword    solar   OR  Keyword wind      1523  Records

    More complex SEARCH strategies!

    Use the features of both   Advanced Search  and   Previous Searches   to combine searches involving alternative terms for concepts.
    To combine more than two search terms, use Advanced Search for the OR operator then use   Previous Searches   to combine the sets with the  AND operator.
      Example
