Some hints on searching these sources

PIO: Periodicals Index Online. 1665- [Electronic resource]

A massive index to some 4,000 international journals, both academic and popular, in the humanities and social sciences from their first issues to date. This is a useful source for finding out about contemporary articles on aspects of art and architecture.

Searching

At the home page enter your search terms in the Search for bar with the search default in Article Title using Boolean operators, AND or OR (remember to put brackets around alternative words for a concept and separate the words with OR) and use the asterisk * as the truncation symbol to collect plurals and other alternative endings to your search terms. Click on Go! eg.
cubis* AND (artist* OR painter* OR sculptor*)

Display

The list of results appears in order of Relevance, as defined by the PIO program. You can Sort results: Alphabetically by journal title, or with the Oldest record first or with the Most recent record first. Click on Go to Journal Issue to bring up a list of the volumes from that journal, with the individual articles listed for the issue your article appeared in. Scroll down to the page numbers for your article.
Under the details of the article, click on the links to View Article or View Article as PF. Otherwise Check fulltext options to see if the Library has the journal.

Output

FIRST, create a Marked List. Select your records by clicking in the small box at the bottom of the record labelled Add to Marked List.
From the top of the screen, click on Marked List to bring up a list of your selected articles and the Selected Citations Options, from which you can choose to Email Selected Citations, Print Selected Citations, Download Selected Citations, or Save Selected Citations to My Archive. The latter is a personal file you can create at the PIO/PAO website.

Modify a search strategy

Click on the Modify Search link to bring up a range of search bars to add more terms by Keyword(s); Article Title Keyword(s); or restrict your previous results by Author; Journal Title; Language; Journal Subject; or Year of Publication.

PAO: Periodicals Archive Online. 1802-1995 [Electronic resource]

Use Boolean operators, AND or OR (remember to put brackets around alternative words for a concept and separate the words with OR) and use the asterisk * as the truncation symbol to collect plurals and other alternative endings to your search terms. Modify a search strategy

The default search is from All selected, that is from all of the subject categories assigned to journals. You may choose to restrict your search to the Art and Architecture category, if you are sure your topic will not appear in any other category, or if you want to avoid articles form other subjects which include your search terms.

The Search Articles screen allows you to restrict a search to a particular Journal Title: or to a specified Year of Publication: or Language:
