Indexes and databases for architecture

Published indexes and abstracting services enable you to find out what has been written on a particular topic in articles from journals, papers given at conferences, and in books.  Indexes may be produced in paper form or in electronic form.

Printed indexes are in the Reference Collection.  These are usually arranged by subject heading or in broad subject categories, with indexes to specific topics.

Electronic databases are available through links from the Library's Catalogue where the Library pays a subscriptions to provide staff and students with access.  You will be asked to authenticate your staus as a student or member staff of the University.  You will be account name and password, for access from outside the Library, use the barcode from your University ID card and your  last name, for authentication..

To find journal articles on a topic use one or more of the indexes following. Specialised indexes and databases are listed first, followed by multidisciplinary indexes and databases and indexes and databases from other disciplines which include issues in the built environment. Remember - these indexes are international in coverage; the Barr Smith Library does not have all of the articles listed in the indexes.

The primary indexes for all aspects of architecture, landscape architecture and urban design are

Use ARCH for specifically Australian architectural articles.  Other indexes useful for Australian issues include APA-FT, BUILD, AHB.  For comments and opinions on local issues see the indexes to national state and regional newspapers through Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre, and eLibrary Australasia.
