Information sources for Engineering
This site aims to provide information about materials in the Library
and
links to internet sources of information in support of the University's
Courses. Links to sources for specific Courses and disciplines
are
listed first, then materials relevant to a range of engineering
topics, followed by links to materials for individual Schools. If
these pages do not seem to answer your question, please contact me,
Kay
Leverett, Research Librarian for Engineering.

Handbooks,
Subject
Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias
Useful
sources
of information, designed for professional engineers, but which can be
very
useful for filling gaps in your knowledge, or as a reminder of some
'forgotten'
information. Many are still in print form in the Reference
Collection but we are starting to afford subscriptions to some titles
in electronic form. Links to the electronic handbooks are
provided through the Library Catalogue record.

information

Finding
references to articles on a topic using Indexes and Databases
Information
about, links to and search techniques for indexes that cover aspects of
engineering.
A
number
of indexes and database services now provide links to the full text of
the articles they list.
In many
cases the full text may be provided as part of the subscription cost to
the database, or where the Library has a subscription to the journal.
The
Library provides access to some of the primary specialised subject
databases for aspects of engineering.
These include
Compendex;
INSPEC;
CEDB; SciFinder; EnergyFiles;
NASA Technical Reports Server;
Water
Resources Abstracts; Web
of Science.
Also useful for a commercial focus
are: - Business
Source Complete and
Emerald
There are a number of
large databases having a broad coverage of
topics, such as Academic
Search Premier; eLibrary;
Emerald;
JSTOR,
Periodicals
Index Online.
A number of the large publishers also produce their own database to the
content of their journals, such as ScienceDirect
(Elsevier) and
Academic
OneFile (Thomson-Gale)

Finding journals in
this
and other libraries
To find out if a known
journal
is in the Library, check the Library
Catalogue.
If we don't
have the
journal
try
- the link on the Library
Catalogue to Other Libraries, to
search
Flinders and UniSA library catalogues;
- the Library
A to Z button; click on O for the Other Library
Catalogues section which provides links to local, Australian and
overseas sources
- Libraries
Australia for libraries interstate which hold the journal.
If the journal is not
available
locally, use our Document
Delivery services.
Dealing with abbreviated
titles
of journals
Often references will
provide
only an abbreviated title of the journal. There is no agreed list
of these abbreviations but useful sources are
-
Periodical
title
abbreviations. 14th ed. 2003. Kept on the table
behind
the Information Desk
- All
that JAS: journal abbreviation sources. A registry of web
resources that list the full title for selected journal abbreviations.
Patents
Remember that the full text of US Patents is freely available.

Language dictionaries
The Library
has many dictionaries of English as well as dictionaries specifically
for
technical material in other languages. A number are now available
in electronic format.
