Start a literature search with the encyclopaedias for facts, discussion and lists of the more important original references.  Available electronically are -

Kirk-Othmer encyclopedia of chemical technology. 1997-
For many years, the principal English language encyclopaedia, covering chemical substances, fundamental principles, manufacturing processes.

Ullmann's encyclopedia of industrial chemistry.  2001-
Provides a broader coverage than Kirk-Othmer, with substantial lists of references including patents.
These encyclopaedias are both published by Wiley.
At the home page, on the right-hand side, under the heading SEARCH, click on the link to Search in this Book >  to go to the web page for the encyclopaedia
at SEARCH FOR type in words for your area of interest.  Click in the box adjacent to Full Text, then scroll down to click on (Search)

In case our links fall apart, there is a back-up print version in the Reference collection.  Use the separate index volume to trace information on a topic or substance.

Ullmann's encyclopedia of industrial chemistry.   5th ed.  37 volumes  1985-1996.
Reference collection  660.03  U41.5

Encyclopedia of chemical technology.  4th ed.  25 volumes.  1991-1998.
Reference  collection  660.03  E56.4

Also in print form is -
Encyclopedia of chemical processing. (McKetta)  2nd ed. 5 volumes.  2006.
Reference collection  660.03 E54.2
Focuses on the process technologies.
Particularly useful is Bringing Costs up to Date, volume 69, pages ix-xii.  This short section explains the cost indexes used in the chemical industry and where to find them as well as providing three tables of examples.

In addition, try one of the many specialised encyclopedias and handbooks in the Library which cover aspects of chemical engineering.

Use databases to find out what articles, papers, reports and patents exist for aspects of Chemical Engineering try -

CHERUB: CHemical Engineering Reference User Bibliography.
  1989-
CHERUB lists articles from prominent English-language journals in chemical engineering.

Ei CompendexWeb.
  1970-
The primary international index for all aspects of engineering; there is some overlap with SciFinder Scholar.

SciFinder Scholar.  1907-
The world of chemical literature in one place!

Many other specialised databases are available for aspects of engineering. See the links in the lefthand column for the most likely contenders.
