Remember the Encyclopaedias and Handbooks!

These are a useful starting point for practical information, on substances, processes and plant design. Most of these sources provide a list of references for each chapter and/or section including articles, papers, and patents.

The Library has three major encyclopaedias for chemical engineering, two of which are available in electronic form -

Encyclopedia of chemical processing and design. (McKetta) 68 volumes. 1976-1999. Reference Collection 660.03 E54
An alphabetical arrangement of topics with a brief index in volume 68. The emphasis is on process design and technology, including economic aspects.

Kirk-Othmer encyclopedia of chemical technology. 1997-
For many years the principal English-language encyclopaedia, covering chemical substances, fundamental principles, manufacturing processes.

Ullmann's encyclopedia of industrial chemistry. 2001-
Provides a broader coverage than Kirk-Othmer, with more substantial lists of references.

If you need a reminder of searching possibilities in Kirk-Othmer and Ullmann's in their electronic form see the notes for the Library notes for the Plant & Process Engineering Design Project.

Briefly -
BROWSE ARTICLES BY clicking on Title then select the appropriate letter to go to the list of topics beginning with that letter.

The Figures and Tables links, at the bottom of the column on the right-hand side of a section, can be a quick way to go back to a figure or table that you remember being in one of these encyclopaedias.

Alternatively use the SEARCH IN THIS TITLE bar to get a list of the sections where information on your topic may be found.

Follow up References from the encyclopaedias
Entries in the encyclopaedias provide extensive lists of references to articles, chapters of books, and patents which will give more detail on an aspect of the topic.
* For articles - check the source title, that is the journal title of the reference by: Journal or Newspaper Title in the Library Catalogue to see if the journal is available here.
NOTE In many cases the title of the journal for a reference is given in an abbreviated form. Find out what is the full title of the journal before you search the Library Catalogue.

* For conference papers - search significant words or phrases from the conference name by: Keywords - use and, or, not, " " in the Library Catalogue

* For information about the availability of patents click here.

Other handbooks and encyclopaedias
You may also consider using some of the many specialised encyclopedias and handbooks in the Library which may cover aspects of your topic such as environmental engineering.
Many of these are found in the Reference collection at 660-669.

Finding more information on a topic

To find books on a topic use the Keyword option of the Library Catalogue.
- use the AND operator between words that must appear in the Catalogue record
- use the OR operator between alternative words for a concept. Remember to put brackets around words separated by OR
- use the truncation symbol ? to allow for different endings to a word
- use inverted commas " " to specify the order of the words in a name or phrase. Use this option with care!

Try indexes or databases to find out what other articles, papers, reports and patents exist that are relevant to your topic.
Useful starting places for PDPE are -

CHERUB: CHemical Engineering Reference User Bibliography. 1989-
CHERUB is a handy index to prominent English-language journals in chemical engineering. Click here for notes on search techniques for CHERUB.

ENGINE: Australian Engineering Database. 1980-
ENGINE indexes the publications of the Instituion of Engineers, Australia.
Use the same search techniques as for CHERUB.

CHERUB covers English-language journals only, many of which are held by the Library. The Library holds most of the IEAust National Conference Publications, and some of the CHEMECA conference proceedings listed on ENGINE.

More indexes
If the sources above are not sufficient you may need to use the major indexes for all aspects of chemical engineering, Compendex (Engineering index) and SciFinder Scholar (Chemical abstracts)

SciFinder Scholar. 1907-
The single source for all aspects of any chemical-related topic. Within the Library, SciFinder Scholar is available on workstation 336 behind the Information Desk.
To use SciFinder Scholar from outside the Library, follow the instructions link from the Library Catalogue record.

Ei CompendexWeb. 1884-
The primary international index for all aspects of engineering, for chemical engineering there is some overlap with SciFinder Scholar.

If your search does not work out as you expect, please contact the Engineering Librarian, Kay Leverett.
