Need to understand a topic but don't need the in-depth presentation of a textbook?

Try a specialised handbook or encyclopaedia.  These sources are intended for the professional engineer who needs a quick, reliable answer, but does not have a library of textbooks at hand.  Most include a substantial list of references to articles and papers on the topic.

Need some journals articles, reports or conference papers?
Use an appropriate index to find out what articles and papers have been written on your topic.

Most topics in Electrical and Electronic Engineering are covered in two international indexes, INSPEC  and Compendex.  Try these first,
then try a more specialised index, such as  EnergyFilesENGINE; EPRI includes links to its journal of research and to the Energy Technology Assessment Center  For earlier information from the EPRI journal click here

Specialised databases from related subject areas may be useful, including ACM Digital Library; BIOSIS PreviewsMathSciNet; PubMedSciFinder Scholar.

Comment on current issues is often found in the broad multidisciplinary indexes such as Academic Search Premier; Australia/New Zealand Reference Centreelibrary; Expanded Academic ASAP

For business and management issues try Business Source Complete and Emerald Fulltext.

For an international newspaper coverage try Factiva.

To find out who else has cited or refered to an article that interests you use Web of Science.
