Indexes and databases for Mechanical Engineering
Published indexes and abstracting services enable you
to discover what has been written on your topic in individual articles
from a wide range of journals, in papers given at conferences, and in
books,
patents and theses.
An indexing service provides bibliographical details, that is the
title of the
article, the author's name, the title of the journal, volume number,
date,
and page numbers, for the location of the article.
An abstracting service includes a summary of the paper.
The major indexes and abstracting services are available in
electronic
form, and also known as 'databases'. These databases give the
flexibility of searching by keyword, the option of
downloading to your computer
or transferring records by email, links to the full text in some cases
and access from outside the Library. Large journal publishers
such
as Blackwell, Elsevier, Kluwer, and some technical societies offer free
indexes
to their own publications.
The Library retains a few specialised indexes and abstracting
services
in print form in the Reference Collection. These services
are
arranged usually by broad subject categories and have indexes to
authors
and subjects.
For all aspects of mechanical engineering try Compendex
and/or INSPEC.
Ei
CompendexWeb. 1884-
Compendex aims to be a
transdisciplinary
index to all aspects of engineering published from 1884 to date,
including some journal articles not yet published but made available by
the pubisher. Compendex
has two search
modes,
use Expert
Search which allows you to control the search with a
keyword search using the commands 'and', 'or', "" .
Includes links to the full text where publishers make articles
available
electronically - this does not mean that the Library has a subscription
which provides you with "free" access to the full text!

search techniques.
INSPEC.
1898-
The major international index covering
physics,
electrical engineering, electronics, computing and control,
manufacturing, materials,
robotics and telecommunications, from journal articles, conference
papers,
research reports, patents, books. Use the Quick Search bar with a
keyword search using the commands 'and', 'or', "". Click
