Unit 3.2 Direct export from Library database searches to EndNote

Some databases have an Export option which puts references directly into EndNote from a database search screen. They include Academic search elite and Web of Science.

  • At the search results screen in your database, choose the Export option. Its label and operation will vary in different databases.

  • EndNote starts automatically. EndNote must be installed on the computer you are using for searching.

  • When prompted, select an EndNote library into which to save the records. Use a new temporary library not your main library.

  • Check the references for missing data or data in wrong fields, as you would for an imported file. In this case compare with the original references in the database if you suspect wrong data. Direct export can sometimes be simplistic: if you find the direct export option produces major gaps in data, try saving and importing (see unit 3.1) instead.

  • Copy references from the temporary library to your main library and check for duplicates, as you would for an imported file.
