Online newspapers

Google News Archive "provides an easy way to search and explore historical archives" of selected newspapers online. News archive search can also automatically create timelines, showing selected results from relevant time periods.

Library Pressdisplay Online access to over 1400 newspapers from more than 82 countries, displayed in their original format and accessible by country, language, or title. Titles are archived for up to 90 days.

Newseum: daily front pages of contributing newspapers (mainly US papers); some of these pages are archived.

world-newspapers.com  provides country-by-country access to "World Newspapers, Magazines, and News Sites in English" 

50states.com gives links to newspaper websites in the US.

Online newspapers.com  maintains an extensive listing of online newspapers, divided by country of publication and title.

Newspapers held in the Barr Smith Library

The Barr Smith Library has a number of Australian and overseas newspapers available either in print and/or electronic format.

Newspapers in the Barr Smith Library: a finding list Includes lists of paper, microfilm and electronic newspapers by newspaper title and by Australian state or country.

The State Library of South Australia has a larger collection of newspapers including South Australian country newspapers and overseas newspapers. Search their catalogue by title and use their Newspaper guide.

Full-text newspaper databases 

Factiva - access to global news and business information, including full text coverage of thousands of newspapers (including Australian titles), same-day news wires, and company reports. Available for University of Adelaide staff and students only.

ELibrary Australasia A resource which includes a large amount of general news material in full-text, including the Australian newspapers published by News Corp (such as The Australian and The Advertiser.) 

Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre This resource provides access to many Australian and New Zealand newspapers in full text, including News Ltd. publications. 

Newspaper Source provides selected full text for 25 regional, national (U.S.) and international newspapers. In addition, full text television & radio news transcripts are provided from CBS News, FOX News, NPR.

Indexes to historical newspapers

Information about older Australian newspapers can be found on the state-by-state newspaper guide.

Many historic Australian newspapers have been or are being digitised by the National Library of Australia (NLA) and can be searched and accessed via the NLA's Australian Newspapers Digitisation Project

The State Library of South Australia provides information on the history of South Australian newspapers through the SA Newspapers section of SA Memory.

The Library subscribes to the 17th-18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers, giving access to more than a million newspaper pages from London, the British Isles and British colonies.

The New York Times website has an archive of newspapers from 1851-1980 and 1981-. If free full-text is not available on the website, use the website to find the citation for the article you need and visit the Library to view the New York Times microfilm. The last 20 or so years are also available via Factiva.

Times index can be accessed in the Library. The Times (London) Digital Archive is also available at the State Library of South Australia and by registering with the National Library of Australia. Follow the link for information on how to register.

News services

TVNews - indexes Australian television news, current affairs and selected documentaries from the free-to-air networks with links to the digitised video content in a compressed format. All individual stories from a particular broadcast are indexed with a detailed synopsis. TVNews enables the searching, browsing, tracking and alerting of television events/items and programs. It is updated daily, with stories appearing on an evening news broadcast generally being available for access the next morning.
