The Australian government directory: education also includes details of tertiary institutions (as well as secondary schools, English language centres, training and development and other education providers.) This site is new and the information that it provides is not comprehensive.
The State Library of South Australia has OZJAC ( a database which provides information on courses and careers in Australia).

Some guides in the University of Adelaide Library
Directories usually give minimal information about people, for
example just their address or affiliation and an indication of
research interests. For more complete biographical information,
look in some Biographical dictionaries and
indexes.
For published research, try also a search by author's name in
the relevant subject
database or journal index or search the Web for an academic's web
page.
