Handbooks, Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

When you need to define your topic and/or get some background reading try consulting a speicialised dictionary or encyclopedia such as the following:

World factbook
Provides information about countries, including:
geography, people, economy and government

Dictionary of the modern politics of South-East Asia (2001)

Encylopedia of modern Asia (2002)

Pacific Islands, an encyclopedia (2000)
Supporting CD-ROM which allows searching of the encyclopedia

Statistical yearbook for Asia and the Pacific  (2008)

Finding Books Using The Library Catalogue

Books can be found by searching the library catalogue. Keyword searching is probably the best way of identifying material, and your results will be maximised by using keyword searching techniques such as truncation and Boolean searching, and by incorporating subject headings into your search where appropriate. Here are some examples on how to construct searches:

use the Guided keyword option and search
for all of these in subject heading
Australia relations Asia (or Pacific)
or
Australia relations
in the top box and
any of these in the second box
Asia China Japan Indonesia Malaysia
(or whichever countries/region you need)

Australia Economic relations Asia
Australia Foreign relations Asia
Australia Commerce Asia...or individual countries
Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Organization)

To search for foreign aid, use the subject headings:
Economic assistance.....which can be subdivided by country
Economic development projects

Terrorism Asia
National security

Pacific Area Politics and government....
or use names of individual countries e.g.
Solomon Islands Politics and government

Government Departments, Documents, reports etc
