Time: Two hours
In addition, candidates are allowed ten minutes, before the examination begins, to read the paper.
THREE questions should be attempted.
1. Either
a. Choose ONE of the following sculptors and discuss what is known of his work, (which survives mostly in Roman copies), and its importance. Polykleitos, Pheidias, Praxiteles, Lysippos
or
b. Discuss the treatment of the female body (either draped or undraped) in Greek sculpture from the mid-fifth century B.C. to Hellenistic times.
or
c. Comment upon each piece of sculpture reproduced on page 2, discussing where relevant its date, context, the sculptor who made it, its style and any other relevant matter..[NB THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE UNABLE TO BE DISPLAYED ELECTRONICALLY - YOU WILL NEED TO LOOK AT THE PRINT VERSION OF THIS EXAM PAPER]
2. Either
a. Painters of the classical period were finding new ways of creating an impression of space and depth in their pictures. Use examples (mostly vase painting) to demonstrate and explain the development of their technique.
or
b. Outline the major differences between Athenian red-figure vases of the classical period and either white ground vases or South Italian pottery and explain some of the reasons for the differences..
or
c. During the 4th century the red-figured style of Athenian vase painting gave way to the more simplified designs of Hellenistic pottery. Discuss the style of late Athenian red-figure pottery and suggest some of the reasons for its decline.
3. Either
a. After Alexander's conquest of the city states of Greece and the Persian empire, the Greek world was transformed by, for example, increased wealth, monarchical systems of government, and eastern influences. Illustrate and briefly explain some of the ways in which the material culture of the Greek world was affected.
or
b. The Hellenistic world used the forms of classical architecture in a number of new ways. Choose any three buildings to illustrate this point.

a) Describe either the frieze or the pediments of the Parthenon and analyse the subject matter and technique.
