Library catalogues
It is often handy to be able to look up the catalogues of other libraries; here are some links to the ones I consult regularly. Suggestions for additions are always welcome.
Australian library catalogues
- Local libraries
- Hereare links to our own Library Catalogue, and to the catalogues of Flinders University, the University of South Australia and the State Library of South Australia.
- Libraries Australia
- Libraries Australia: the Australian national database, provided by the National Library of Australia. The resources include books, journals, pictures, music, maps, newspapers and electronic documents, located in all major Australia libraries. University of Adelaide staff and students can use the enhanced service.
- Australian libraries gateway
- A quick way to find any Australian library and link to that library's online catalogue.
- Serials in Australian libraries (SIAL)
- Use SIAL to find which libraries in Australia hold a particular journal. To request an article from a journal held by another library you'll need to use our Document delivery service.
International library catalogues
- COPAC: Consortium of University Research Libraries (UK)
- The combined catalogues of the major British university libraries.
- WorldCat
- As its name implies, a catalogue of the holdings of libraries throughout the world. Produced by the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), it includes catalogue records for books, manuscripts, computer data files, maps, computer programs, musical scores, films and slides, newspapers, journals, sound recordings, magazines and videotapes.
Major libraries' catalogues
- British Library Integrated Catalogue
- Search for details of over 10 million books and other material from 1450 to the present day.
- Wing short-title catalogue, 1641-1700
- Short-title catalogue of books printed in England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and British America, and of English books printed in other countries, 1641-1700.

- English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC)
- The English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) lists over 460,000 items published between 1473 and 1800, mainly in Britain and North America, and mainly, but not exclusively, in English, from the collections of the British Library and over 2,000 other libraries.
- Library of Congress online catalog
- The U.S. Library of Congress Online Catalog contains approximately 12 million records representing books, serials, computer files, manuscripts, cartographic materials, music, sound recordings, and visual materials. The Catalog also displays searching aids for users, such as cross-references and scope notes.
Search engines for library catalogues
I often use these two search engines to find a particular library; try them, they're good:
- LibDex
- Libdex is a worldwide directory of library homepages and web-based OPACs. The directory does not include links to terminal-based OPACs.
- Yahoo! Reference: Libraries
