French individual authors

Search engines

One of the best ways of looking for critical work on an individual French author is to use a search engine to find suitable sites and sources of information on the Internet. You'll find that the quality (and even the existence) of the resources you may find will vary enormously; some authors have had the full treatment: others might as well not exist.

For an example of what is available, have a look at this Nathalie Sarraute page or this one on Louis-Ferdinand Céline.

Library Catalogue

Especially useful to members of the University of Adelaide community, the Library Catalogue is a valuable source of locally-held information on a particular author or topic. Select Subject Heading in the Search by: box and type the name of your author in the Search for: box.
As an example, here's a Subject Heading search for books in the Barr Smith Library about Albert Camus. Note that you need to type the author's surname first, followed by the initial letter of his/her given name, like this: Camus, A

Newsgroups

If you have used the Internet search engines for information about a particular author but have found nothing, a worthwhile alternative is to check the files of an appropriate newsgroup. Keep an eye out for a FAQ (=Frequently Asked Questions) archive where answers to previous queries to the newsgroup are stored.
If you have an e-mail account you can post a question on your author directly to the newsgroup; you may be pleasantly surprised at the speed with which your question is answered.
To locate a suitable French newsgroup, have a look at Francopholistes : l'annuaire des listes de diffusion francophones, or go to my separate Francophile newsgroups page.
